Was not a good day yesterday, finished up grading a township road and was headed for the house, heard a little rattle and thought is was the cab fan no warnings or anything, reached up and turned the fan off and about the same time there was a loud band and I looked in the mirror and all I could see was smoke.

It's an older John Deere 672B with lots of hours but until now no problems what so ever, ran like a top and always started no matter how cold until yesterday.

Couple of pictures of what i found when I opened the hood. Now the task of finding an engine that we can afford.

Thats the bottom end of #5 rod sticking out the block right behind the starter.

That should be a 414 Cubic Inch (6068) John Deere engine.
Worse thing about a John Deere engine is the rods. Change bearings and Rod bolts at 5 to 6 thousands hours and they will run a lot of hours.
There should be a lot of them out there as John Deere used them in a lot of Construction Equipment.
750 Dozer, 690D/E excavator just to name a few.
There was Three for sale just a few miles from me a few weeks ago at a closed shop for 4000 dollars each they had be overhauled??
Owner died I don't know if the wife sold them???

I may have found something, after about 20 phone calls I found a rebuilder in KS that can supply a complete rebuilt eng. dyno tested ready to bolt in less starter and flywheel with a one year unlimited hours warranty so we will probably go that route.

After a little research I found out that the eng. that blew may have as many as 15,000 hrs on it.

If that's the case and the engine hasn't been touched regarding bottom end, rods, & pistons during that time then a failure was to a certain extent inevitable. Nothing runs for even, despite that we would wish it to.

Well my 140G has 20,000 hours on it without the motor being touched, knock on wood. :D

Tips from Diesel Engine Builder, 30 + years, now retired.

I have talked to Machine Owners Over the Years and sort of surprised by their Lack of Knowledge. They think that a Diesel Engine is capable of running 10,000 hours without a major failure, some do but a lot don't make it. Most Industrial engines come with a Warranty Period of 3,600 to 7,200 hours. The Main Bearings last 2 to 1 of the rods. I recommend a pan pull to check rod bearings at 5,000 hours. Also, run oil analysis, watch for the copper to go up, meaning it's pass the bearing (alloy) material and into the copper. After that.. it's into the steel shell and major engine failure time. The cost of pulling the pan and inspecting and replacing the rod bearings is nothing.. compared to the Major Expense of down time and a $ 5 to 15 K engine & labor.
