From a repairers point of view

Engines are near bulletproof - check for the obvious, oil, radiator, etc. + they do have a fair bit of crankcase pressure

Transmissions can cost alot to repair - with some temperature on the trans oil - at an idle, click through all the gears - watch the pressure gauge - should take the same amount of time to engage each gear & the pressure should return to the same for each change also.
Take a look at the final drive sumps - machines that have done alot of work wear the protective, moulded steel guards around the drainplugs away.
Use a crowbar to see if any movement at the final drive output shafts (sprockets)

Take a look at the loader control bank for leaks - spools can get chrome worn off & seals alone will not fix.

$12000 is not alot of money for a machine of that vintage - around here anyhow.......

Thanks alrman. Do you own a case or just work on them? I have a small excavating business and I want to get a bulldozer, if you were in my shoes would you get this case or find a newer or different brand,It won't be used daily if i put 200-300 hours a year on it I will be surprised.

Case dozers of that size are good machines, pretty simple to operate and fix and case was a forerunner of the two speed shifting, or speeding up and slowing down a track to turn instead of just stopping a track to turn. I'd guess it has a six way blade on it, most did anyhow, and was a great way to go with a dozer that size, very useful and made them an all around purpose built machine. For 12k, thats pretty cheap, for my area anyhow, just check it over and maybe take some oil samples of the components to see if they are in good condition. As for the engine, if nobody has changed it out it should be a cummins 4 banger in the d model, I've got a C model with the older case engine in it. As for what else to look for, not much just run the dozer for a few hours and see what it does under a load.

tryed out dozer sunday ran good checked trans pressure in all gears itacted the same every gear, the final drive sumps look good as did the rest of the bottom did.blades is pretty sloppy, chains + sprocket are like new, one brake worked one didn't, the only thing I really dislike is the two handles to operate the blade I wish it was one. offered him $10,000 cash he said had one person to look at it by saturday if he doesn't show up or buy it he will take my offer.

pjdiesel, that would be a good deal, they are a real good dozer, grade well and good power to ground, not to big and not to small, easy to move.

Do you run one or have one, how do you like the two lever blade control? Iwould have got it for 12000 if it was a single.

pjdiesel, have never owned one but have ran them a lot in the past B/C/D/E's, there are a lot of them here in N.C.. I started running cats with the hand clutches and winches for blade and pans so a joy stick for the blade is nice, but the two stick works just as good for me. If I was wanting that machine the extra stick would not stop me at the 12000 range in price.

For 12k id be all over it we own an 850D with right around 5500 hrs on it only majors have been the turbo went down and the tilt cylinder bent badly (operator error) and one of the bull gears took a dump when they replaced the chains did they go with the sealed and lubricated or the dry tracks? Honestly after a couple days running the machine the two stick will become second nature.. I think you will be surprised with the power the machine has they are just all around good machines and at that price theyre a steal in my area

I worked for a company that had a 850D. I ran it some but spent most of my time on a scraper. Seemed like a good, tough tractor. Big enough to get work done and small enough to haul with a 1-ton. I remember the operator saying he could run all day on 25-30 gal of fuel. I own/operate a 1150-g now. Great tractor. Case is good equipment. Hope you get the deal!

just got dozer today paid $11,000 runs good and goes good. Person I bought it from wasn't big on maintance air breather was bad doesn't look like it was greased in a while, he said he hasn't used in in a year or so. The brakes don't work, one side not at all other side works but sticks on for a while after you use it.
