After a much needed off season bath, I found an ugly crack in the pin boss on the boom pin closest to the cab(couldnt be on the easy side).

So after a bunch of grinding and alittle die grinder and tourch work we are here.

And then after an afternoon of welding, were back to here and ready for a little paint, and putting the window back in.

If you look close in the last picture you can see the copper plate that was used so the weld would not stick to the pin.

Awesome work mate, could you recommend the best type of welding rods to use for this type of work?
Thank you.

If you are buying electrode from a welding shop ask for low hydrogen stick. Something like 7018 or 7016. However, if you are welding something with an open root I would suggest 6010 or 6011 for the root pass, then fill the remainder with the low hydrogen electrode. Also, pre heat never hurts. Hope this helps.

Ddigger: looks good from here! That's not the best spot to get into. Now I know why you had to put the window back in. Lol.

A needle gun and peening every pass to stress-relieve it after removing the slag doesn't hurt either.

Yes sir, it sure does help, i'm a beginner welder and posts like these helps a lot to broaden my knowledge, i've seen these types of cracks before, but management just decides to dump the part and spend a butt-load to purchase new ones. Thank you for sharing.

Usually people add a half in piece of bar stock over the top of that and run it back down the frame about a foot and half. That is a beautiful job by a highly skilled craftsman.

Thanks for the photos.

Looking back at the photos I think I might just have tried to close up the crack before starting to make the weld repair, for the simple reason that the pin bore would be slightly oversize if the bracket was left as it was. That slight amount of "slop" between the two could end up giving the pin enough room to beat on the bracket and re-crack it. Just a thought.
