I allways tought they was standing there waiting for a job? This is highly usable equipment for a big job where it's possible to barge them in here you get some equipment for your money!!. They're some more transportable than the 144's.

I have some pictures of these machines, maybe I posted them, but they was way too dark. Did you get the serials, I would bet 60036, 60072 or 60102 which is all tag machines.

more and less than youd think.....the "weight" chunk of them is worth very little as its really not got any value to it...but every other bit and peice ...is worth alot....un-cleaned is about 200-250 per ton.......

I guess in a way, the very thing that made them great (size) has finally worked against them in a changing market. Less old crop to harvest, and no way to transport them road legal? The market for spares will be limited also, as more of them are retired.

044 Madill Swing Yarder

There was a big Madill 044 working out of Klamath, California during the 80's & 90's. I used to see it quite often as I worked for another outfit but in the same country. I was amazed at the wood it would pull. She was big & she was heavy. When they switched over to second growth she went away....... I never heard where. I was working on a Washington Trackloader at the time, we moved through their landing one time, the two of them together would have been a great picture. It made the Trackloader look like a tonka toy........sure wished I'd a packed a camera.......

I just aquired a 009 I don't need or want, and called Seattle yesterday regarding that machine. I was told $260 per ton this week. Prices have dropped off pretty good here lately.

Sadly she's worth alot more there than anywhere else.

Just off the barge, opposite Tmar industries, Campbell river, Vancouver Island. Headed for the scrapper.

You don't even see them advertised for sale most of the time, just off to the scrap man. We were looking at using one in the rock pit back in '07 before we acquired our 171, the quotes just to barge one from Nanaimo to Tacoma were upward of $15K. Any good ones for sale up there?

These machines where built for big logs in the 70's. It was built more than 130 of them and I still think more than half exist, I supose parked in the most remote areas of VI and some on the coast. These machines need some skilled operators and big amount of wood to be productive, not nescesarily old growth. Unlike the 144 they don't need a lot of guying in easy terrain, making an easy setup.

I think a lot 044 have been and will be scrapped or parted out, and a lot of them will exist, in use, far longer than possible for us to predict.

Would that be one of the later models with watercooled Witchitas and such????? I might be looking for the drum set off something like that......

17107 is on the road again. New owner (3rd) is Randy Parker and he's taking her back to Forks for a week or two before it goes back to work.
Just left the gate in Toledo, should be on I-5 going North now

Did you get another machine in the pit to replace it?

Not really. We're down to just the TY-80, but we have been trying to get out of the rock business. Wouldn't take much to have the Thunderbird up and going, but now that we've gotten a taste of yarding on tracks instead of jacks plus the torque convertor vs a transmission it just makes more sense for what we've been doing. Only thing we'd probably buy at this point is a 009 on a crawler.

I also heard today that Tim Brown bought the other 171 that was for sale down in Portland. I've heard from a few people that it is a bit newer, but alot rougher.

Just found my way back on to the S Madill Loggin Equip site---- does anyone know for sure if the S stands for Sam ?.....My great grandpa Robert had 12 children and Sam was oldest.......... as far as I know he was a blacksmith in small hamlet called Clanwilliam in southern Manitoba.....I guess he being the oldest struck out on his own and didn't stop until he reached Vancouver Island---hopefully that's a reasonably accurate family history.....most of the family remained in Manitoba although another branch may have moved to southern Alberta ......Thanks from Robert Madill (Edmonton Alberta ---moved from Manitoba 35 yrs ago)
