3D grade control comes into its own on pavers

It seems the 3D grade control systems the manufacturers -- Trimble, Topcon, Leica, Gomaco, primarily -- are pushing in the concrete and asphalt paving businesses are coming into their own. Success stories are starting to show a similarity to the mid-adoption phase in 3D control systems for earthmoving, with the much-more-objective advantage that highway jobs are measured for smoothness, and automatic grade control is hitting the numbers.

Combined with automatic grade control for the subgrade equipment, the systems offer major materials-cost savings. In fact, it appears that using it on subgrade equipment is just as valuable as automatic control of the screed.

Don't have that much contact since I have flipped from the contractors side to the engineers side but one of the contractors hired rotomill to mill at the airport project I am working on and it was having control issues and was not precise enought so after day 2 they packed it up and sent the sales rep with his tail between his legs. I did notice a few gouges in one of my inspections.

Were they using 3D control on that mill?

yes I think it was tremble's version on a terex pr 950 they were having issues with alignment and horizontal control. I am only sure of the basics I was on that part twice a day while they were milling but there were heated debate with this and it ended with take that off this machine and we will do this the old way. The tolerences we had were 3 millimeter. However we were more concern with finished tolerences.

was the 3mm tolerance vertical or horizontal?

was it a gps or ats system on the mill? gps is only accurate to 30mm vertically unless they have a way of setting up laser augmentation on a mill but it would be pretty damn tough to get the instrument height

3mm is pretty tight - they'd have to mill a little slower to ensure they got that tolerance, even with the robot (ATS). A lot will depend on the condition of the mill, milling depth, material and the milling drum teeth condition. It can be achieved though...

The Trimble Sales Rep should have taken a close look at the mill and managed the customer's expectations properly before making promises...

In the interests of full disclosure, I work for Leica's 3D Paving Systems group. If the Trimble system failed, it reflects badly on all machine control solutions providers, because the technology works.

I won't try to sell you anything, would just like you get get a balanced view of the technology and what its capable of :)

If you're interested to know more about 3D paving, feel free to drop me a line - we've been doing it longer than anyone, now 13 years - in
close partnership with major paving equipment manufacturers, such as Gomaco, Wirtgen, Dynapac, Voegele, G&Z.

Actually I was reviewing the spec for next years extension and was wrong about the milling it is 10mm for the milling but they cannot be consistent.

That sounds a bit more realistic, and should be achievable even with a piggyback hydraulic valve kit to regulate the milling drum height, if its properly tuned-up and the valve matches the machine's own hydraulic characteristics well enough. Its all about understanding the machine's condition and character.

Not sure if it was Trimble that put a 3D system on a paver.. Unless it was somebody who just did not know not to do that and was not affliated with Trimble.. Another thing to remember that 3D systems are only as good as the control that they use. Are you sure it was not a sonic tracer on a paving system?a I would like to know what and who did this?

Asphalt paving service

Even though asphalt material is dark in shade yet it is considered as a good alternative to cement since it has similar qualities as cement. Inorder to make asphalt react like cement you must add bitumen, sand and other items. For a better explanation and more details about how you can install asphalt paving service to your parking lot contact asphalt paving services experts . Many like to make their parking lot to look stunningly beauty they also prefer the rest of the areas of their house look presentable as well.

im trying to get this sensor from any where so i dont have to buy it from a cat dealer cause they are so expensive.
