D4C inj pump gear puller

I have a D4C with a 3204 engine and I need to pull the gear off my inj. pump to get pump back in time. The service manual shows a puller FT1538, in the book it's attached to the front cover so I don't know how it attaches to the gear. Does anyone know any more about this tool or a way to get the gear off without loosening the inj. pump and pulling it back. It seems the FT stands for "Fabricated Tool".

I've got a snap-on steering wheel puller which is handy for doing 3306 fuel pump gears which picks up the 5/16 UNF bolt holes on the gear to bust the gear off the tapered shaft which, when used with a shorter jacking bolt can fit into a pretty tight spot if required CJ2001P is the set p/n

FT is a fabricated tool so you can make it yourself, or at least something that will do the same job. When I get in work tomorrow I can get you the drawing of it if you like.

I looked at SIS and it seems to me the tool used for removing the inj pump gear is FT 1979. Basically it's a triangular plate with three holes in the outside which fix to the studs in the cover. There is a hole in the centre to line up with the centre of the inj pump shaft. The centre of the puller has a boss with a thread in it and a forcing screw. You fix the plate to the front housing then use the forcing screw to push the shaft on the inj pump out of the taper in the gear.

You can make something up by using a piece of plate with three holes in it to pick up on the studs, then a centre hole with a nut welded to the back of the plate to use for a forcing screw. If you still want the factory drawing let me know.

I have always used the standard old steering wheel puller also. It takes 2 3/8" UNF about 1.5" long bolts to attach to the gear. Im wondering why the pump got out of time, unless someone didnt get it right before.

I have a steering wheel puller myself but I don't see how that would work since there are no threaded holes in the gear, I have removed the gear from a 3306 before which is a pease of cake since you have a big cover to go thru, The plug covering the 3204 is only 2". Nige, according to the service manual the puller is a FT1538 but if you have a schematic of the tool used I would appreciate it, I just don't know how you can push on the shaft without having a way to pull on the gear or at least hold the gear in place because all you would be trying to do is push the gear out the back of the pump, and yes LonestarCobra I had pulled out the pump before to fix an internal fuel leak and did not think I had turned the pump and did not insert the timing pin in it when I put it back in, seems to be runniong about 30 degrees retarded.

Heres pic of the FT1538 You still have to unbolt the fuel injection its really not a gear puller it has two ears that hook behind the front cover and you put a socket on bolt that secures gear you put a extension through the hole in tool and back the bolt out which pushes gear against the front cover plate pushing the fuel pump out of the gear .like you said there is no way to use any other type of puller . But ive remove many with two pry bars between front of fuel pump and the back of the front cover this works 8 outa 10 times.

Dang, I forgot about that, I was thinking 3304 instead. The prybars have worked well for me also.

I'm getting confused here ........ not hard I hear you say but bear with me ..........

According to me FT1538 is for separating the gear/shaft for the "Accessory Drive Gear" for a 3204 Vehicular Engine.
FT1979 is for separating the gear/shaft for the fuel injection pump on a 3204 engine. I thought the OP wanted to loosen the gear on the injector pump .........

Because the OP did not specify the machine Serial # prefix I looked at every model of D4C equipped with a 3204 engine. The injector pump gear puller is the same for all of them - FT1979. I am in the process of getting hold of the drawing.

I just put a prybar behind the pump, back the retaining bolt out a couple of turns and then give it a few taps with the hammer.

When you reinstall, be sure to torque the bolt to spec. If it's overtightened, the next time you remove the pump, the "taps" will have to be turned up a few notches ;)

(And make sure the customer isn't watching. It looks a little "unprofessional" :) )
