We have a GMC equipped with a Cat C-7 on rent . On the dash panel there is a light that says "Service Engine Soon". I assume this is the engine maintenance indicator. Having serviced the engine how is the indicator re-set..?

I went into the engine ECM with Cat ET but could not find anywhere to reset the maintenance interval timer.

That info should be in your GM owner's manual or supplement.I doubt if it would be in the Cat engine supplement. That's the way mine is anyway---2002 C7500 with a 3126E engine

The Gmc's with the GM engines were reset by turning the ignition on and pumping the foot throttle 3 times and the light should go out. Don't know how long this fix is good for.

When I checked it with ET it shows a Diagnostic Code active for the DPF. And I am thinking you could be right, as it's been running for the past year on fuel whose specification comes nowhere near ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel .......:rolleyes:

Owner's Manual, what Owner's Manual ........... it's a rental FFS. Of course it didn't come with an owners manual. Worst part is that the outfit we rented it from are probably about 2000 miles away from where I am right now, and there is a large chunk of ocean between here and there.

I was just hoping out loud that it just MIGHT be something that was resettable. Always worth a punt.

What year truck? How many miles? call the rental company and inform them of the light being on. This will soon turn into a non running vehicle, starting with a derating situation then progressing worse. It is involving parts of the now "NEEDED" emmissions controls installed on on road trucks. "Service engine soon", "Check engine soon" are indication a running condition that will eventually harm the engine. Also, it could be viewed as abuse of equipment by the rental company.

Truck is 2008 vintage with 5600 miles on the clock. Rental company were informed as soon as the light came on - at the same time the truck was parked ans we have not used it since. They had the truck sent to their local agent who allegedly "repaired" it and sent it back to us. The light is still on ......... we are not putting the truck back in service until the problem is fixed. If they can't fix it then we are shipping it back to them ......... the truck is a POS anyway. Problem is, as posted above, the truck is rented from an outfit based in NJ, we are located in the Caribbean.

Go to your ''local'' friendly Cat dealer and let them put it on their scanner.Or you can pay me and forward 1 round flight plane ticket[IST CLASS OF COURSE],and I'll come with my ''code buddy'' and tell you what's wrong.Seriously, this should not be a big deal.

I've got Cat ET myself. The ECM has an active Diagnostic Code related to the DPF. I was not 100% convinced that the message on the dash panel was related to the Diagnostic Code. After having canvassed opinions here I'm pretty sure the two are related. Therefore it's the rental company's problem,if they can't fix it we'll put it on a boat home.

I personally think it's all related to the fuel we use here, and the DPF is plugged. If I recall correctly ULS diesel (that's what the label on the dash says to use) is no more than 15ppm of sulphur - our best fuel here is around 1500ppm ...!

Because unlike them I'm a pro who actually cares about equipment condition, and if something's fixable I want it fixed or if it's not fixable here then boot the machine off the job. You're in NJ. Even heard of a truck rental outfit called Lomma in Kearny ...??

That's them. We have a shed load of boom trucks and tractor/trailers down here on rent from them while we work on a big construction project. What makes me mad is that they were told before even quoting us rental rates how poor the fuel is here compared to the US, they were even given the spec of the fuel. Then they sent this POS down here with a label on the dashboard "Use Ultra-Low Sulfur Fuel ONLY" ........ good one - NOT

I know that American trucks shipped to new Zealand can be UN DPF'ed. I wounder if your local cat dealer can take your DPF out and throw it in the back. ship it back with the truck at the end of the contract.

Problem with that is that the electronics relating to the DPF have to be deactivated or the engine goes into "limp home" mode. Don't ask me how I know this ...........

My issue I guess is with the company who still sent this truck down here after being clearly told that the fuel we were using was in no way ultra-low sulfur.

Your truck just needs to be regened. If you are able to get the code you should be able to get in to the sevice side on et and do a manual ash regeneration. It will take care of the light and limp mode. You may have to do this more often than usaul because of your fuel.
