If the valve is on top of the hydraulic tank, it will most probably be a valve to release the little pressure that builds up in the hydraulic tank during use. Before removing hydraulic components on your machine, it is advised that you push the valve and release all remaining pressure in the hydraulic tank. This should save you from getting wet. Hope this helps.

looks like t.p.r.v. tank pressure release valve it lets the pressure off the tank if you depress it you should hear it hiss as the pressure lets off

Looks to me like it's just an elbow set up to vent the tank, are you sure it's not just open to the tank? There is sometimes a hose run to a filter or a clean place.

you might be right about that if you have a look at the picture to the right of the elbow y
ou can see a hole in the body where i presume the hose would drop into ???

There's supposed to be a hose connected to that tank vent and the hose drops down in that notch that you can see in the pic. They typically come from the factory fitted with clear vinyl tubing, which deteriorates in sun light and falls apart after a few years.
