This goes without saying but I'll say it anyway. Be sure to wire wheel all of the loose rust before you start welding. Also to reduce the warpage you can clamp the part to a heavy beam and keep it clamped until you are done. If clamps don't work, tack weld a beam in place and remove it when you are done.
