The 843s are a very strong and simple machine and should serve you well. I would agree the problem is likely linkage but since your are new to the unit are you sure the safety locks that the lap bar engage when its down are operating properly. I have seen debris lock the pedals and the plastic tops of the locks break off. Normally when the plastic tops break the springs fall out and the pedals operate all the time; can be dangerous getting in and out of a running machine. Good luck and excellent choice with the 843.

The controls only operate with the arm down, they don't work with the arm up. It does seem like a good machine, I'd just like to fix it.

sounds like the return spring in the control valve broke or the interlock with the white cap is binding the pedal find your control valve on the right side as you look from the back and trace you linkage

aslo you can open the back door and look up the right side and see it

Sorry I can't help with your mechanical issue, but I can attest to plowing with a skid steer. I had a tractor for years to plow snow, it worked fine and did a good job. Now I have a skid steer and wonder why I didn't switch over a long time back, I can to the same job a lot faster. I plow quite a lot and IMO the skid steer is the cats meow.
