By the way, can you share any more info on the D-6 with wheels on it?

JD, I believe the conversion is not factory but the rubber tire D6 has a tall enough gears to run the auto bond and it bounces from front to rear like a kids tow .

With it having a cable control unit on the back it probably was designed to pull scrapers a distance after being push loaded by a dozer. But it's so tall geared it doesn't have enough power to turn in anything higher than 2nd gear. Literally it bogs down that bad when those big tires dig in.

It would be a scary ride towing a load of dirt wide open in high gear. The operator would have a tough decision.... do I wear the seat belt to keep me from bouncing out or leave it off so I can jump :beatsme

Why rusty chains on polished rigs?

I am surprised that with all the work time and money invested in some of these beautiful rigs that I have yet to see prettyfied chains.

The way I learned to clean chains when I was working in Stagecraft/Theatrical Rigging was to throw them in a cement mixer with a bag of walnut shells and let it mix.

They come out looking like polished stainless steel. :cool

That was usually with the small-link alloy chain from chainhoists and such, so you might want to get big chunk walnut shells for 1/2" chains...
Whatever you do, don't throw black walnuts with the husks on in unless you want black chains and hands and clothes!

I just pulled a 3/8" chain out of one of my piles and it had chunky surface rust on it, so I laid it out in the gravel driveway were I park at home and drove over it a couple of times a day for a few weeks, and it cleaned it up pretty good, but I still wish I had a mixer handy...

I look forward to seeing some chains that are congruent with the trucks,
Ben~

JD, I was wrong on the rubber tire D6. It was designed to pull agricultural trailers in the fields. It was not sold new with a CCU but possible added later for better balance :beatsme

ke6gwf, with all the work to keep these trucks looking nice I sure hope folks ain't looking at our chains, what about the binders?

I can see it doing a bang up job of pulling trailers through the field. I bet some enterprising farmer had a mind to pull a pan with it too, hence the CCU.
From what you say, that may have been a losing proposition.
Good looking rig in any case.

all of our fleet Professional trailers are 2005 or newer...I am not sure what year that trailer is though since I can't see the trailer number on the front of the gooseneck.

Hey, Murray trucking. We used to use your company to haul our equipment when we were in California, in the 1960's. KTK Wrecking out of San Francisco.
Living in Washington state now, don't see many of those mechanical detatch lowboys around here.
Here is my lowboy, 1963 General 35 ton hydraulic detatch, 1991 T600 KW, Detroit 400HP 60series, 9 spd hwy gears. My how fast that truck will go. :usa

I went and picked up a 5x5 sheep's foot for a tractor show and what a pain :Banghead

I was surprised the Mighty D4 that weights 15K would barely move the roller... and yes it was empty too! No way would it even begin to pull it up the dove tail so I unhooked and built a nice dirt ramp up on the trailer then I could load it with another D4's help. But now my truck won't pull the trailer from the ramp.... what a pain.

Got a question, my KW has Pete air leaf suspension and what is the measurement that I'm suppose to set the air bag height? I heard a few numbers all around 12 1/4" from top to bottom but would like to confirm that number and how it's measured.

Thanks,
Mike

Detach

thats how they roll out west!

Recently I've seen those funny looking detach trailers here in Phoenix AZ. I've run Blackhawk/Fontaine/Entyre/Eager Beaver/Trail King 60 ton detach trailers plenty and would NOT consider trying to run that style of trailer.

The Detach procedure is in two stages and to lift your load up, you back under the neck of the trailer with your 5th wheel slide all the way back. Watching the low boy operator lifting a 85,0000 milling machine was....scary. It almost flipped due to the angle of the ramp and the requirements of those style of trailers.

Its impossible to understand how that style of trailer got so popular out here. Regular Detach trailers are much faster and safer.

"According to the Service Manual I have, it's 11.5". This is measured from the top of the rubber spring to the bottom of the aluminum piston of the left hand side of the truck."

This is from a google search on the subject, I can't confirm or deny if it's correct!

You can probably get a pretty good idea were it's supposed to be by looking at the geometry and finding the place were the truck and all the parts just sit right.

Nice Blue and Renn truck with a Just/Dump dozette

I finally got ~1200 pictures downloaded from my camera from the last several months of driving and road work and such, so expect a lot of interesting pictures to show up soon.

I passed this on 101 between Gilroy and Salinas a couple of days ago.

Lower Lake?

The truck is making the turn from hwy 29 onto hwy 20 in lower lake ca. Oversize loads and hazmat trucks coming from or going to I-5 have to detour off of hwy 20 and go around clear lake, this is where they meet back up with hwy 20 and continue on towards the coast.

Are you sure thats lower lake? It looks like the Upper Lake junction to me, but I could be wrong.

That picture brings back memories. My first job in CA was running a D-4D pulling a 5X5 just like that. WAY too much roller for a D-4, but it was a trooper. Hardest part was learning to back up. It would only steer one direction. Backing was a challenge, but I got the hang of it, and came up with a method that worked. The owner actually wondered why the transmission always had problems on the poor thing.

Had some fun with the KW hauling a British government restored FV432 to a show. Ya he bought it just like it sits for $45,000 with all original equipment.

Got to take it for a drive and when you pull the steering clutch lever half way it releases the clutch, pull it a little more it applies the brake. A nice design not having to use the lever and brake pedal, sure does ride a lot better than a Cat too.

Well it hasn't been used yet...this is a new one. I just started working for the company and was just trying to get a feel for the industry as far as if people had an opinion about the brand or not.

Hope this wasn't the wrong place to post this. Apologies if so...

Dirtman2007 bought a 30' 20 ton Kaufman tag in the last couple months. Too early to judge durability etc, but if you PM him you might glean some info off him.
