Does anyone have any thoughts good or bad on a Case 420 skid? Your comments would be appreciated.

I've heard there was some motor issues with them, the Series 3 it was fixed I guess. I played with one at a demo day but haven't really worked one to get a feel for it.

Thanks Stuve!

It's the engine issues and causes I'm really looking for info on and a rough estimate on cost for rebuild given the issue. Cummins engine or do you know?

The last series of Case I worked on was the XT so don't know alot about the 420.

The 420 is a 'newer' 40XT I think. I don't have any idea on a rebuild price. I want to say it's a Shibaro(sp?) engine? The newer 420's are so close to the 440 size I've never really checked them out. I'll check on the engine. I had a 70XT and was very happy with it.

It shows for the 40XT that it has a 3.9 Case non-turbo engine. The 420 is called a Case 422T/M2 and in another it's called an ISM 2.2LT. The Series 3 420 has 3.2 turbo engine. I couldn't find the good spec sheet for the 420 but hope it helps.

Thanks Stuve!

I did find a Shibaura 2.216 liter engine. Don't know for sure which engine this unit has. Never heard of this engine good or bad.

The machine is a 2006 so I'm thinking it's one of the first series?

I'd stay right away from a 420 if I was you. The 410 and 420 have been problems for us. There is no short block or long block available you have to buy a complete engine. The 410/420 will not pick up as much as a 40xt although the specs say it will. We have a customer with forks on a 40xt who lifts skids with rolls of plastic. He bought a 420 and when lifting the same skids the machine would tip forward. We took the counterweight off and added a 2" thick X 4" steel bar behind the origional counter weight. This has helped solve his problem. The model we have had the least trouble with is the 440 and 440CT.

gggraham,

Thank you for the information. Wanted to make sure this wasn't just an isolated case of one bad engine. I'm alittle surprised that Case moved away from a proven performer like the Cummin's engine.

The actual machine looks really good but would need alot of $$$$ to put back to reliable. Extra work and capital I don't need to waste.

Maybe someone will reply that has some good things to say about this model.

Thanks xc for the info, I appreciate it!

I've decided to steer clear of the 420. Just don't know enough about the model and the comments from the folks here have made me aware of the potential problems.

This forum is a great place to learn, no question about that. Wish I was 18 again. I knew everything then :)

not sure if you bought a skid steer yet but for what it's worth i'm actually impressed with the 420 i've worked on new hollands all my life and the 05 and 06 420's i've worked on has the shibura engine same as new hollands. very reliable engine, i have a customer that uses that new holland's in a foundry, 20,000 hrs. motor has not been touched yet. my customer that has the 420's runs them with solid tires in a recycling facility by mexicans that can't speak a lick of english and they have well over 2500 hrs. and still going strong.

Thanks for the info tightgtp!

I had one in my sights that needed the engine rebuilt. Was somewhat serious to buy it, rebuild and resell. From all the comments I decided to let it go and the seller was asking too much anyways IMO.

I am just keeping my eyes open for another hobby machine that may turn a small margin. Have a few offers out there on different makes/models but nothing yet.
