New to the forum and new to CTL'S and appreciate being allowed on your forum .
I have an early 277 with low hrs and good track gear .Do have an issue with a drive motor though .It has broken its drive shaft to the cage .We got it repaired but it has done it again .Outer bearing and internals are good and alignment doesn't appear to be an issue .I am looking for an exploded view of the motor or some direction on where I can get the information from .I have a cat manual but it just gives a complete assy part number .Is there an updated shaft and if there are part numbers for it on its own ?or can someone here give me an idea on how much I should expect to pay for the complete assy ?
Thanx
Bernie

Bernie, what model is it?

I do believe, for some models there is an update for the shafts. I'm afraid Westrac is your only real reliable source for this.

Is it rexroth, sauer danforss, poclain, eaton or others? The model is very important for us.

Unable to establish type of motor .Part number of the motor is 199-5313 which upgrades to 220 -8142 or 219-4397 .Does that help ?Need an exploded view or something to get individual parts for this .
Thanks

You should let digger... or anybody, for that matter... run

your computer. It would totally alleviate the issue in the above

MCR05 Drive motor

Ok here is an update .Machine is a 2002 model 277 cnc 000263 s/n .The early Drive motors have a ten bolt flange which is machined steel about 1/2 "thick .These obviously weren't any good as the change was made at s/n 499 to a 12 bolt cast steel flange about 1 inch thick .This was obviously a problem for Cat .Now if I purchase a new drive motor I get the later system .Problem is that there is a need for changes in the sproket assy and outrigger shaft .Does anyone have access to details about this change ?Was it a recall from Cat in the USA ?There are quite a few differences so there must be an upgrade bulletin or something ?
Your help would be appreciated ,as you could imagine there is little information here in Australia on these changes

Thanks again

I can't imagine that your local CAT dealer would be too happy to help you since you're importing machines. :pointhead

Me, I am a small fry so I wouldn't say that .I have just spent money with them that I wouldn't have otherwise .Thats all they care about .Our family having owned Cat machines since 1936 means there are a few people there that can help me with issues I have .Problem being there was very few early 277's sold in West Aust .This being a problem that was fixed after the first 500 machines made says the chance of anyone knowing anything about this issue , on this side of the world is remote .

There was a service letter to replace the motors and sprockets on the early 277. Yours should have been done but wasn't even though the machine was still in Colorado up until the end of 2004. The letter expired in 2003. There was a kit that had the parts to do the swap.

The kit 219-4397

The kit consists
2J7550 0002 RING-RETAINING
7X2553 0020 BOLT-HEX HEAD
7X2553 0024 BOLT-HEX HEAD
1908103 0002 PLUG
2041431 0002 GUARD AS
2104672 0002 BEARING GP-SPRKT
2208122 0024 WASHER
2208133 0002 SPROCKET GP -B
2208142 0002 MOTOR GP-PRF-820
2208150 0002 BEARING GP-SPRKT

Contact your dealer and see if they can help with some goodwill.

It just seems odd that you keep coming on the forum asking for help that your local CAT dealer could clearly help you with by logging onto their computer system. CAT dealers store and have records of all service letters and bulletins for every model of machine that CAT manufactures. They could easily tell you the kit part numbers...just like Lee-online.

I can't imagine your CAT dealer Westrac (I looked it up) selliing more that 30-50 MTLs each year in your area so if you've imported 3 machines you've potentially impacted 6-10% of their sales. How could they not care? Especially the local salesman in your area. I know if I was still selling Bobcats you'd be getting the least amount of help I could get away with- no breaks on pricing, no special efforts to move you through a service issue any faster, etc. Good luck if you ever do a pump or an engine.

All that aside, I hope you get your machine running. Maybe you should try your local ASV Positrack dealer. I own an RC50 and use the same drive motor you do. The RC50s used that same 10 bolt flange when they were first built. Mine already hada 12 bolt flange when I purchased it.

277 pump issues

Digdeep ,
This is how I have experienced it here .We have 1 dealer of Cat gear in our state which is bigger in size than a fifth of the USA. We have a a population of approx 2million .That brings up a care factor .Let me explain it better .25 yrs ago Komatsu in WA (our state)was on about a 5 acre area and was run out of a small warehouse,Within the 5 acres .You hardly saw a Komatsu peice of equipment here .It is now massive .Cat had machines here which were giving the smaller contract companies a hard time .In this particular case it was the 245 .(at this time I shared a workshop with what became a major contracting company in WA with over 1600 staff )They ended up buying Komatsu diggers .Even at this stage it didn't seem to worry the big guy up the road .Leibherr didn't even exist and you should see them now .At around 1988 the local cat dealership changed hands and again 2 -3 yrs later .This also was a turbulent time for Cat in WA as supply was also an issue .So when you have the mentality of I am the only one and you'll have to use me if you want Cat gear .It makes people want to shop around .Sales are huge here at the moment for anyone with access to gear .People with experience are hard to come by and they seem to gain some and then move on and work for other companies or start their own operation to cater for the smaller operations .
In saying this I have some people in there that can find out more information than the guy whom comes in the front door and asks questions about a particular machine .The information may be available there but there is a mentality as well to deal with .
Now as you may be aware it all comes down to the bottom line with big companies .Some lines of equipment make money on sales and others don't .But if you have to sell the companies line of gear then you do .There were no backhoes ,skid steers or the like in Cats yard 25 yrs ago .Just bulldozers and loaders .
Now, if I was a salesman for a large firm here I would be helping the guy whom has shown some initiative and brought in machines as much as I could because he will need parts and the product will need backup and the product is what we all sell . If I also look hard enough , I might find out the reason he feels he needs to do what he is doing and is making money from selling our product .I can then work on how I can get his customers to come to me .
Hope that makes sense

I'm not disagreeing with you that your local CAT dealer may be arrogant. I also think you have every right to do what you're doing......I'm assuming its perfectly legal in Australia to import equipment.

I'm merely pointing out that your local CAT dealer (arrogant or not) is not going to come running to find out what he can do for you. Quite frankly, if they are as out of touch as you describe, they will probably do everything they can to make life tough on you.

Also, while the general opinion is that the CAT dealer isn't servicing the compact equipment market well, would it be possible that there is some young salesman out there busting his nuts trying to earn a wage, and now, not only does he have to work through his employers actions, he now has to compete against someone bringing in his own brand of equipment who may or may not be able to support it well enough to maintain the brands reputation...an example being your efforts to search high and low for a 12 bolt flange that I'm sure is sitting in a CAT parts center somewhere.

I wish you the best of luck in your business venture because I've seen guys like you come and go.

It comes back to the machine being an early one .These changes were made before 500 units were made .When I had Cat come and check over machine he said they don't have any machines anywhere near this Serial number .So I find now that there should have been a swap out with components .If I can find out a bit more about the service bulletin I may be able to talk with Cat USA and maybe they will be able to help out .
I don't import for a living I just had a container in the USA which had only a small item in it and decided to get myself and a mate a couple of units to fill it up .These guys whom come and go seem to be doing quite well over here at present .They cater for a market and whilst it is there so will they exist which helps keep the bigger companies honest .
