i'm sure this has been covered before, but i am about to weld on my 07 volvo. I am really worried about my computers. I can disconnect the bats, that is a given, and make sure that the ground is good and close to where the welding is happening.

Anything else i can do to prevent computer damage?

Thanks.

Welding.

Hello.

The Worst thing you can do is disconnect the battery and leave the hot lead open.
The reason for this is that the battery acts as a low resistance path to ground.
If you disconnect the battery, connect both terminals together of the vehicle.
Disconnecting the computer is not a bad idea.

So you want me to pull the pos and neg cables off the bat, and connect them together before welding?

Correct.

Hello.

Correct, it is induced voltage that does the damage.
Normally a vehicle simply returns voltage to "ground" that is the body and chassis.
External forces such as lightning have no effect on aircraft due to the shielding effect of the outer skin.
But, when you apply electrical voltages you also induce voltages, this is how a transformer works.
By providing a common "bond" the chances of an inductive surge is less.
That is also why you want to have your welding ground as close to the work as you can, and on the bit of steel that you are welding.
Remember, path of least resistance.
