Hi I am in college right now at CMU, and this summer I was looking to get a road construction job as I am in Construction Management at school. Could anyone give me some advice as to where to look, or any online applications I could fill out, or even maybe a job lead with your company. I am from southeast michigan in Oakland County. Any company names and info would be appreciated. Thanks alot guys!!!!!

Ahhh, the impetuousness of youth...
I haven't been on a const job for maybe thirty years---or forty---but from a lot of the posts I've been reading on these old-truck/ag/eqpmt sites, Michigan is pretty well closed for business in your (hopeful) line...
Ob's stimulus is supposed to be cranking up "shovel-ready" jobs, but I think you'll find that with a whole lot of const people working short hours, or laid off completely, every const outfit that hasn't gone to hispanics has a bunch of highly experienced people they can call in if a job opens up, and I would guess that everyone on this forum knows people who need a good job very badly...
This's no reflection on you; you've just graduated at an unfortunate time. No one's sure whether things are going to slowly--repeat, slowly--get better or go the rest of the way down to the basement--or the sub-basement...
My suggestion would be to make as many personal (face to face) contacts as you can, and not to be bashful about going back every month or so--you want people to see you want to find something and that you don't mind putting yourself out to do it... With sympathy, Bud

One suggestion would be to search some of the larger companies and see if they have an intern or co-op program for college students. When I was in Building Science at Auburn, we had many companies that offered these types of programs.

Hello everyone. I have been reading on HEF for a while, and I must say it is a great site! I am also from MI. Industry in general up here "north of the bridge" is suffering too, whether it be construction, manufacturing, logging, whatever. Some (very few) places in other states are starting to climb out of the unemployment hole... Michigan is digging deeper with a heckuva big shovel. Don't give up though. Persistence pays off.

would you like fries with that?

hell ya union...**** on scabs

I'm not sure what you problem is, but if you've only taken some classes and you have no real world experience and you're already looking down your nose at independents, you've got a lot of growing up to do. All I can say is I hope they're giving out hair nets on graduation day.

You might have more fun if you go to the Ford forum and tell everyone that Ford sucks.

joispoi..... Well put!!! I have no problems with the unions but if your a young man youd better plan on just finding Something. The unions are basically dead and burried south of Toledo.

Adam5557 if i was you i would try AJAX industries or Rith-Riley Construction, they are both big paving outfits and Rieth-Riley would all most be the best chance. Good luck cause it is tough in the construction world right now

Employment.

Hello.

There are jobs in Texas.
But, expect to see around $7 to $8 an hour.
That is correct, they hire the Mexicans and sponsor them under a work visa.
Really cuts down on labor costs.

I'm afraid your not going to have much luck. Most companies had regular employees laid off or just working 40 hours last year. If the Legislature doesn't raise the fuel tax, MDOT won't have match money for the federal dollars. No federal dollars and it will get real slow.

Yea I dont see anything good happening in michigan in the near future. I was over at the APAM convention at Soaring Eagle yesterday and none of the Rieth Riley guys had much good to say. I'm in the same boat as you having trouble finding many leads on employment in the region. We have a few ferris students hired on at Kiewit in texas for the summer, but nothing close. I have a good chance of working at a small company just running a loader and laboring, which I enjoy but thats not what we're going into.

sorry to say but chances are slim, but not none your best bet would be internship but dont know if they would even need that their is still alot of people on the waiting list to be called back to work. if it's gonna be feast or famine,i would get afew phone books from the areas you think you might want to work, not sayin thats will the work will be but an idea of the surrounding areas and let your fingers do the walking call every contractor listed and see if they are interested in what you have to offer, cant hurt! good luck and send some work my way lol

I Agree with heavytorching, get out there and start putting out your resume, most of the contractors i deal with are traveling a lot more now a days than they ever have before for work. i am just a one man show and in the last couple years i have gone over 150 miles for a 2 - 3 day job. 5 years ago most of my work was within 25 miles of home. :Banghead
