You mean you did not keep trying untill it was stuck up to the floor plates?

If you would have, then the loader operator would have known you were stuck. lol

you gotta love that smeary loam! it is about like pig fat for traction when it gets a little wet. Smart to stop right away and get a pull.

NCD, take all the mud off it and there is still a fair bit of cleat left, really I'm amazed myself cause them shoes have over 20K hours on them, but most has been on dirt.

JD, I guess does that mean I am getting a bit older? Instead of back and forth and getting more stuck I just tried twice and then just called to have the loader come over from the sand pit.

Bill, thanks like i said must mean I'm getting older or wiser as well.

cant seem to post the pic so here's the link . its a d8 that fell into a lava tube on the bigisland of hawaii when it was ripping the lot .....little over a yea later we had the job to prep the mile of road that the same tube crosses and we just about collapsed it with one of our compactors .

its pretty common here to see or hear about a machine falling in a tube because they are every where .

thanks for posting it .....but they get hurt pretty bad ,allot end up with neck and back injuries.a few operators died from the fall or the machine falling on them but that's pretty rare .....i have a few more pics somewhere of that incident about 50 feet in every direction the ground is only about 1 and a half feet thick.

that cave the dozer fell into is the longest lava tube in the world ....it runs from the top of the mountain all the way to the ocean

Thats nuts gary808 the ground under the machine is only like a foot-foot and a half deep!!! How do you guys not worry about falling in these all the time? I would have some permanent pucker factor.

we always are worried about droping a machine in ......but its just a risk you have to take working over here ,......on our bigger older machines we installed seat belts on all of them and make sure the rops are in good shape ......but yeah its not a good feeling when you se the ground around your machine start shaking and all the trees shaking when you drop the ripper .

even our bomag 213 compactor on some job's when the compactor would be turned on and the ground would bounce like 5 inches in about a 20 or 30 foot circle .........and the operator has a look on his face like he just **** himself ....before he can get it to shut off .

I have seen similar things in the old mining districts. Sometimes the old miners would tunnel in, then "Glory Hole" which is to keep caving the roof in and hauling it out the tunnel. Done in the old days with Chinese labor who were easily replaceable. No OSHA back then.
Most of the time, these glory holes would come clear to the surface, but I remember finding some that just came close. We would drill and shoot, then push forward with dozers as far as you could, then drill and shoot again. Once, after pushing out a good ways with the available muck from the last blast, we took the drill out and started the next pattern. 18" of rock and the drill steel went into open space. We retreated to the last shot, drilled some more holes and shot it, and the hole that opened up was over 200 ft deep. The hole was shaped like a giant upside down pear, and was 150 to 200 ft accross at the widest. I bet the tunnel rats never knew how close they were to breaking through.

I was sure glad the rock was strong, or it would have been a hard landing with the D-8

RE: dozer in the hole. Now that could make a guy paranoid. RE The empty haul truck. Bet the driver thought it was all over and is glad to be alive.
