Bridge Construction Pics

I'm not sure how many of us here get to work on projects like this, but I thought I'd share some pics from a different angle. On the way to go fishing around a month ago I took these. This is I believe a 6 lane bridge that will replace a 4 laner that had its better days.

The smaller bridge happened to be opening as we were going through. I was told that is the 2nd largest of that type of bridge in the world, kinda fun to watch it spin around like that. They were letting one of the crane barges through at that time. I believe that is the highway that the new bridge is replacing, so another reason for the replacement is to avoid having the wait times for the openings.

The object to the right of the flag is a medium sized excavator, but I forget if I was able to see what brand.

Boy oh boy bill, how you could be so close but so far you are only a few minutes away from this and you just saw this now? I have seen all the construction aspects of this bridge considering it is a major link for us to cross that river several times a week. Construction Equiptment Guide has wrote some aticles on this project This was the first bridge of this type to be built in the USA I beliveve it is called a compression bridge due to the natrue of its construction. The bridge they are replacing is actually going to a museum because it is the last turntable bridge used these days. When the old bridge is removed another span like the first one will be constructed in its palce and one bridger will be 3 lanes 35 south and the new one will be 3 lanes 35 north. It all will come together with a whole new overpass and croossover and will do away with the old victory circle. I was one of the first vehicles to be able to drive over that new span the day it opened it is like riding on a rollercoaster you actually notice you are going uphill at a steep angle in a short distance, I am curios to se how they handle ice control on this bridge it looks like it will be very slippery. Gotta give those guys at George Harms Constuction a lot of credit 3 bridges over the same span of river in just over 2 years.

Looks like you guys will have to get a pretty good run at it to jump that gap in the middle though....

Very funny! however I must tell you that that bridge is not only very steep and high but has a hell of a twist to it, you can't tell from the pictures but in the 1/2 mile span crossing the river it makes like a 60 degree bend. when I cross over it the next time if there isn't alot of traffic maybe i'll snap some pictures. gotta watch taking those bridge pictures nowadays big brother is always watching.

Oh I've been watching these bridges getting built with much awe for these past years, from below. Where I park to take my friend's boat is in the Harms parking & storage\equipment\supply area, under the Parkway & Route 9 bridges. This was just one of the times I wasn't piloting the boat, preparing tackle, or opening & steadying a beer to enjoy, and happened to figure out to pull the camera out to share my awe Just thought it was cool that there was only that last little "jump" to go, and figured since we have this site now, there'd be a similar interest in seeing what I saw. I'll try to catch that curve next time. And the height is pretty incredible. Many of my pics are at full zoom & they still seem sooo far away lol.

That is not the only turnstyle bridge left actually. The next span to the East on our way to the fish is also the same type. It carries the NJ Transit RR Jersey Shore Line. I have some pics of that with the train rolling over us, I'll post some when I get a chance. I probably also have other pics of the bridge construction, &\or the already completed bridges from below, that I'll take a look for when I get a chance.

There is also one in Cape Breton Nova Scotia.

Great pics, Bill. That bridge (the old one) is almost exactly like the one that I have to drive on everyday, as I live on an island. They are talking about building a new one, because of the dated one and the wait times when boat traffic is up. I wonder if they are going to do something like that! If they do, I will be sure to get pics of the process as well. Kinda cool.
