Any recommedatons near NE or Long Island? I mean where you send a core in or have them just do your motor? Looking at 97 Lull with JD which runs good but smokes and I was told needs a rebuild. I did find a site once like diesel boys or something. Thanks!

I am in West Sayville but either county is good thanks!

was looking at this machine if it goes cheap cheap
JDT0404ST729140 engine serial number. In a 97 Lull

any wild guess on rebuild cost if I take the motor out? and nothing major is wiped out? Say it runs good just smokes a lot.

Like I need another project :pointhead:eek:

try capo brothers on lakeland ave in ronkonkoma (631) 471-1971 if they wont do it they will have someone to recomend.
there is also "drive train" or "hallahan" in holtsville. and "cassone" in ronkonkoma.
and im not sure if they are open any longer but you can check "truck loaders" on 25 in smithtown. i know they stopped selling equipment but i think they are keeping the repair shop open.

last time i checked an in frame rebuild was around 3500$ but it all depends on how busy and how desperate a shop is now a days. its probably cheaper to have it done off the island, but freight will probably kill you.

Are you sure it needs overhauled? Unless it starts hard (needs a sniff of ether to start in the summer) or burns lots of oil (quart every 30 hours) it might need injectors.

First of all, replace the inner and outer air filter elements. Replace all the fuel filters and fill then with John Deere fuel conditioner instead of fuel to prime the system. I suggest buying a gallon of the conditioner ($35?), fill the filters, and dump the rest in the tank.

Also, look at the exhaust stack and manifold. If there is oily residue on the joints of the exhaust system after the turbocharger and no oily residue on the manifold where it bolts to the head, look carefully at the turbocharger. Remove the intake boot from the turbo and spin the impeller by hand, making sure it spins free. Check the impeller for end play (in and out movement)--there should be VERY little. There will be a little play up and down--this is normal because this is the space the oil occupies when the turbo is spinning while the engine is running.

Now, back to the injectors. If the turbo checks out and the fuel conditioner and filter change does not help, you need to test the compression. If the compression is low, chances are that it is overhaul time. If the compressions is good, it might be time for a set of injectors. The 4045 engine uses pencil injectors, which are fairly easy to change.

Good luck and don't let anyone talk you into an overhaul without doing a compression test first.

Hey Deerehauler,
All very good advice. In this case, this is a machine Speedpup is considering buying...if the price is right. It's in Illinois, he's on Long Island. It's reported the machine smokes alot. Speedpup is just trying to count the cost of possiblities. ;)

Thanks guys for the help I'll keep ya posted:drinkup I talked to one guy today and he said they same as DH. Also said I may be better getting a remanufactured engine for it? Said about 7200 not sure as I could not hear him well that might be after a 2,000 core charge. I'll know in a few days if the deal goes as Paul said trying to plan for the worst  but even that is not possible at times ;):beatsme

What seller said about it below.

Machine starts and runs fine and all functions work fine but it has a great deal of blow-by and needs an engine rebuild.

I am in farm country so excuse my ignorance--what exactly is a "Lull"? I was thinking an excavator or a crane. If so, it may have done a bunch of idling around which will lead to a lot of blowby. Unless this machine is selling for way under what it is worth, I would make arrangements to run a compression test before I bought it.

Another consideration since excessive blowby is mentioned is that the liners have been cavitated. IF the coolant was not changed at proper intervals and coolant conditioner was not used, the cylinder liners may have small holes in them allowing coolant to enter the crankcase. A very small amout of coolant will 'burn off' as excessive blowby but ANY antifreeze in the crankcase wreaks havoc with engine bearings. An oil scan will point out coolant in the oil. Any moisture on the inside of the valve cover or under the oil fill cap indicates serious problems=overhaul.

On the ag side of Deere, their REMAN engines carry a longer warranty that the engine I could rebuild in the shop. In our case, since we don't stock engine rebuild kits anymore, it was quicker to order a REMAN SELECT engine and install it in the guy's tractor, combine, ect than to order the kit and do the engine ourselves.

A "Lull" is a telescoping boom construction forklift. Uh...at least the more modern versions are.

Well the machine was yanked off ebay :( said they sold it locally. May be he saw no bids and it ended tomprrow. It could have gone for the 4500 in the reserve auction. They go from about 20-29,000 for a used machine of that year. Figured if I got it cheap and dropped some dollars it would stil have been good. Oh well one less project. Thanks for all the info.
