Hello all,

I own a 6000 hr JCB 215s3 4ws. I have found the hydraulic oil heats up a lot during heavy trenching. Along with that, it seems like the backhoe controls have gotten stiffer or sticky over the years, particularly when the oil gets hot.

Any ideas on where i should start looking?

I assume you've changed your filter and that the oil is clean/clear? What about the oil cooler, is the core clean and not clogged with dirt?

Yep, all that has been checked by me first, then the dealer. They didn't think it ran that hot, but my heat gun tells me different. The spec is 30F over ambient, I'm around 40 over ambient. As the oil gets hotter the controls get stiffer to the point where i have to cool it down. I'm in Canada, ambient only get to 90F max on a hot day. Machine wouldn't survive in Texas.

My thought is an internal leak somewhere causing a lot of extra heat.

Are you sure the cooler isn't clogged? just because the dealer said it's OK doesn't really mean anything.....

It should be possible to use your heat gun to check the in and out temps. oil temps at the cooler. If the fins are plugged, the inlet and outlet temps will be nearly the same. A internally plugged cooler or one with no flow going through it would have an outlet at very near ambiet as it is located ahead of the radiator.

There is also a solenoid controlled bypass valve located in the loader valve stack which bypasses directly to tank to prevent engine kills when you "stall" the hoe. It is possible this valve is opening at a lower pressure and leaking hot oil to tank rather than the normal cooler path, thus heating up the oil.

This is kinda what i think i might be. But how do you diagnose this.

All i know it it only happens when digging for a while (trenching) with the hoe. No problems using the loader.

Other than that, i have no ideas. Could be it be?
Oil bypassing a cylinder piston?
Oil bypassing a spool ?
Oil bypassing some sort of unloader? or relief valve?
Oil not going through the cooler for some reason.

How do i narrow this down?
