i was offered a job of sorts last night. a buddy of mine. his rich mother just bought a few pieces of iron. couple of dozers. back ho. bob cat. truck and trailer. she's wanting to start up an excavating firm. she had some one running the equipment. but it didn't work out guess he was a drunk. any way i don't know the full story. but what i was told was she's looking for someone to come in and basically start up a small company. And grow from there. she's willing to purchase more equipment when needed. So my questions are as follow.

What's kind of figures do you use to figure a job?
What kind of figures do you use to figure equipment cost.
What kind of over all profit margin should there be after everything is said and done.

Would this possibly be a good venture to go after or should I stick working for the man? Id be working for the woman now. but from knowing his Mom she's the type of person who would give me total control over everything as long as there's a profit. She's all about making money.

She's even willing to bring the shop into union. Everything feels right. guess I need to wait till I meet with her next week.

so any help you guys can give me id appreciate it. thanks payton

The real question is do you know how to bid work and run a business? Lots of operators I know can run the equipment but they don't know much about the business end of the equation.

You got to love people that have the cash to buy all new toys :D .I think as far as figuring jobs there are books out there that will get you in the ball park as far as pricing but I think alot of it just comes right down to have the experience.I just figured a demo job for a set of cement stairs and I was told by the purchesing dept for the co that I was in the ball park as far as price but I just figured out time and equipment needed and removal cost and just how much profet that I wanted to make. Some contractors put a 10-20% on top of the whole job so on a $2K job at 20% you would make a$400 profit. But you have to know how much time you will be there at any given job that you do so you don't loose money because of time.
The one thing I do know is when you bring any big equipment in the price will not be small so don't thing that way.

If you got the talent, skill, didication to build her a business, why not build your own business.

In construction it takes more then a bankroll, its not like having a law firm or brokerage firm were you push papers all day.

Does this lady understand blueprints, code, OSHA regs, EPA regs, bidding jobs, maintnence on equip, labor, industry outlook/trends?

If she wants a business to bankroll, maybe a theme restraunt would be a better idea.

I think that is great. the only thing I would want is to be part owner. she wants you to build her bus when alls shes doing is bankrolling. no I would not do it unless I was to get something long term out of it. becuase lets say you do a great job building her bus. then she decides. for some reason or other to sell it or maybe she passes then your out on your rear becuase new owner wants someone else to run it. jmo but I wouldn't put my heart and soul into building someone elses bus only to someday be tossed aside like yesterdays lunch. becuase like you said alls she cares about is making the doe. again jmo
