Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else here runs shears.

If so, what kind of machine?
What shear?
How do you like it compared to others?

And don't forget your pictures.

Here are a couple of ours...

Only really spent any amount of time in two shear machines. Both being Volvo 460Bs. MCM Management 460B have a Labounty MSD 4500 shear. She was a little light in the rear end for that shear. The other 460B belonged to Northwest Demolition and Dismantling. That machine had a Labounty MSD 3000 with saber lube.

Nice tidy machines,

Did you do the blades, etc yourself?

If so, what did you think of the SL series shears?

Never did have to monkey around with the 4500, but on the 3000 I worked on the blades. Fairly simple to change, just gotta remember to use the torque wrench and get everything torqued to the right number. Otherwise they loosen up pretty quick. Once the loosen up, those bolts break pretty easily. We were cutting a lot of junk with the 3000, steel plate, and rebar was a majority of what we cut. That and "tendons" from concrete structure that consisted of 1/4 inch steel strands in a bunch about as big around as a softball. Those and the rebar were extremely tough on the blades.

Liked the saber lube. Was real nice in the thinner pieces of steel plate. A lot of time we fold the plate over on itself as many times as possible to cut more efficently. The problem with that is you tend to get pieces that slide between the blade and the jaw, which can jam the shear. My only complaint about the saber lube is the canister that holds the grease. It is stainless steel. We had a problem with the welds cracking where the bottom of the canister mates up with the top.

Nice pictures, thanks! Would like to see more of the Northwest unit(s) if you have any.

A 4500 is a load on an EC460B/C but the specs make a difference. There are differerent counterweights and undercarriages available. Obviously if the EC460B had the heaviest CWT and the expandable undercarriage for a little wider footprint, you'd feel a difference.
