Hello 4D,
Yes the good old days for sure with the way things are now. Geez really don't know how we have lived so long with the iron we use to operate, No ROPS/No AC/No Seatbelt/No Radio. I seen on Tournanet site that Phil is comming out with some new books this year. Ought to make for some good reading. Any seat time on the Tournatractor?

Wabcos in NZ 2006

Just found these pictures on an old card of mine. Shows Goodmans at work, Churton Park, Wellington, NZ back in 2006. There is a great shot of the scraper that was converted to a compactor in the background. Have thrown a picture of their Mitsi tracked dumpers in too. I know a little off-topic but interesting to see the variety of gear on site

Jim,

You posted some 353FT pictures -- SN GP32043 BPA17-d, which was a sister of our machines. Do you recall where the pictures came from? I wondered if this was an old AMAX machine from Sun Spot Mine or one of the units out of the Wright Mine. Once I get a few posts underway, I'll dig up a few pictures of 333F, 333FT and 353FT's running in the Pacific NW. At one time we had some 3-339F's, 3-333F's, 15-333FT's, and 11 353FT's -- all of which I spent much time on. The 353FT's were great machines to run -- balance, power and elevators that wouldn't quit.

Wabco's at work

Hi all

I am the proud owner/operator of the 229F shown by graemets3 in this thread. Just stumbled across this forum when searching the web on the subject of Wabco scrapers - great to see my machine already displayed. The old girl has just celebrated her 40th birthday and is still more reliable than the Cat 621B's she mostly runs with. Since the picture graemets3 took, she has been repainted and looks a million dollars. As soon as I work out how to post pictures in this forum I will show you all how good she looks!

I also own a V Power C Tournapull which I am in the process of restoring.

Great to see the pictures of Wabco's at work and to read your thoughts.

Cheers
Gordon

G'day Weakness

Love the photo of V Power! Mine is an open bowl and it seems that I can not show you yet because of admin issues. But as soon as I can i will post you a picture of how it looked when I bought it.

Cheers

Great photos of the 353ft and 333ft,
I did hear that getting suitable chains for the 353 were difficult. A kiwi fellow i met said he used D4 dozer chains on his 252FT, he did say it more than doubled the life of his chains. A really nice fellow he had about two of them and a 259FT.

Chains -- they were relatively straight forward to come by into the mid/late 80's. We had a run made by Jeffries with the segmented sections. For the 333's, occasionally you could find some mining chain made by Rex. We too tried the D3/D4 chain and had issues with it spreading -- it didn't stay together on the 333FT's and ended up moving it onto the 333F's for lighter duty.

A fantastic post guys.
There is a company here in Western Australia that bought the old Wabco scrapers from Christmas Island and put the bowls behind 651B prime movers. The Wabcat is what they called them and are still in use to this day.Unfortunately no pics. The 51`s were repowered with KT19 Cummins engines as well.

This would be great to see/hear more about. I believe we met this fellow in '99 when he came to the states for our final auction.

Wabco Scrapers

More scrapers -- blue & white 333FT was from Las Vegas show. Others are from Mt St Helens cleanup. More to follow.

More Scrapers

The B&W were in Southern Oregon on a roadway project, the others are from our 353FT lineup heading to auction.

More to come.

353FT's

Here's some showing loading these buggers on a sand project and others with them split in half unloading after shipment.

The rear power train on the twins were equipped with planetary drives. The engine/trans DD12V71T mated to a Allison 5965 -- and indeed they were factory units, not custom. The 353FT's (as seen by other posts and notes) were planetary drive front and rear -- '74 with the pre-production unit (BPA17-A) and later into production as the 1975/76 BPA17-B. However, that being said, one of our early twins (the blue and white 333FT from the Vegas show) did suffer structural damage in the late 70's and was converted to a single via a 651 rear frame from the tailgate to the tail and ran it's remaining days out until the mid 80's this way.

Great pictures!!! Unfortunately I only ran one Wabco it was an open bowl, a later one with a steering wheel. A question for any of you who ran Wabco self-loaders. I heard there was a special loading range in the transmission that adjusted your speed to the depth of cut and type of material. Did the elevating scrapers you ran have that? Did it work as advertised?

Hi Buckethead,

Yes I've run those elevators.
Transmission was an Allison VCLT series and had a variable input converter.
Certainly worked in the 111A's and 222G's that I operated.
We used to load in 2nd range no problems.
Wabco's work in sand REAL well - better than any other elevator I've been on
