Hough shifting and ID problems

I just traded for this Hough loader. The areas by the radiator support have been ground on as they were retrofitting a V461D air cooled Wisconsin engine in it. The steering wheel and dash are also missing. I don't know anywhere else to look for identification on it. It has 15-5-25 tires on the drive axle and 750-16 tires on the steer axle. From the pictures I have been able to find it looks a lot like a HAH but I don't know for sure.
The first issue is you can't find the gears,(forward and reverse),when you do find them they are solid, just hard to find. I need to identify it so I can get a service manual to find and fix the problem. I hope I don't have to completely remove the front of the transmission to fix it.
I have contacted my local IH dealer, he suggested an IH dealer in Springfield so I contacted them, and I contacted a Komatsu dealer but no one has any ideas so far without serial numbers. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
Tim

I haven't heard of a 15. You wouldn't have any info or place I might find more info on them?
Thanks

Find info in PayLine

I heard the other guys in the old iron forums mention a book titled PayLine as a sure help on hough payloaders identification. I found this same book in the public library and it helped me figure out the similar ?'s that I had about my Hough HA payloader. Hope you can find it somewere. I know it had pictures of machines similar to yours. -datsunman:)

Thanks. From what I can figure I believe it is a HAH. I bought a few parts lists from EBay for a HAH and they look similar.
Thanks

You're absolutely, 100% right, on that one Iron Horse... it got a friend of mine.

It occurred a long time ago, and he only recently told me about it, but he was loading logs with an old track loader... and that very thing happened.

A log rolled down the lift arms, right onto the seat, with him there... :(

The log won... crushed his pelvis and broke both legs, did some other damage to him as well, although, I can't remember exactly what.

I can't remember how he got out from under it either, but it almost killed him.

He said he was very lucky to have survived, and of course, the old injuries
still bother him... you know they always get worse with age... never better... :(

You just can't make many mistakes around logs... and expect to walk away,
as I'm sure you're well aware.

Very good advice in your post... :thumbsup

Rops

I definitely need to. I don't intend to use it for anything like that. I am just using it around the place. I have already gotten a mobile home wall on me using it. I was lucky and didn't get anything more than a few bruises but it scared me, not enough, but scared me nonetheless. I intend to build one for it eventually but we all know how that works.
I still have to get it to shift properly. The gears are solid once you get them found but I now have to shut the engine off to find forward. I think the spring for the detent has broken but I am a little spooked about "busting" the transmission because I really don't have the tools or facilities to do it. If anyone has had the transmission apart on one of these I would love to get some advice on it like when I pull the bolts out for the front will everything fall out or will I be able to see what is going on and remove things as necessary.
I am not looking forward to tearing it apart but I don't think I am going to have a choice. I do intend to attempt to put an external detent on it to see if that might work but I am not holding my breath.
Thanks
Tim

Hi okumaguru,
I really think it is a HAH too. I bought one last year and I have great difficulty finding information on these machines. I think they are rare.

The first issue is you can't find the gears,(forward and reverse),when you do find them they are solid, just hard to find. I need to identify it so I can get a service manual to find and fix the problem. I hope I don't have to completely remove the front of the transmission to fix it.
I would love to help you on your transmission but I believe that my engine was also changed ... It’s a Diesel. Perhaps if you had pictures nearest I could compare with mine…

PS: Excuse my English, am French Canadian. :canada
After my first regulatory messages, I'll show you my HAH Hough's 1950’s in a new tread. Please to meet you! Good forum :thumbsup

I have a few pictures. According to what I am seeing on mine they have attached the engine to the factory transmission. I bought a few books off of EBay. Some of the information seems to fit but they are only parts manuals so they really don't help with how to disassemble and reassemble them.

Ok ... I see... I don't have the manual shop... :(
:ideaI already had a transmission problem. I had great difficulty in finding the gears and one day, he locked in 3rd and I could not do anything! This was not the transmission but the selector box below the floor of the driver. I disassembled, cleaned, changed some bolts, and reassemble them (very simple), since it goes much better. the gears is less hard to find now. I think now to modify it, or build a new one for smooth operation.

I hope it can help you but, maybe you already try to. :beatsme

Good luck!
