Wabco's down under

Jim,

I did not know Wabco had a factory down under. I just assumed all Wabcos were U.S. built. Wabco discontinued scrapers in North America in 1980.

Keep on running those Wabcos as long as possible.

Dug,
The reason Wabco is popular downunder is because Wabco made them down here until the 80's during the 60's and 70's and 80's when the scraper was KING.

There are alot of people who refuse to part with thier Wabco's.

There is quite a comprehensive book about Wabco in Australia produced by paddington publications.

If you google tournanet you will find a link to the book, its still available.

Wabco had a factory in Rydalmere in New South Wales, just a pity theyre not made anymore.

G,day....the pictures of those old Tournapull scrapers reminded me of my old Dad. In 1942 he was a sergeant in the Australian Army training tank operators in Brisbane. Because of the shortage of operators in the private sector he was released from duty to go and help open new coal mines at Muswellbrook. He along with Bert and Stan Thiess picked up 2 Tournapulls at Blair Athol and towing a extra pull scoop each, drove to Muswellbrook via Brisbane. A distance of just over 1000 miles. Back then most of the roads were not much more than dirt tracks. The machines then were clutch steering (no such luxury as hydraulics). On the way down they spent some time doing work on the Heifer Creek Road which was being constructed as a defence road, on this job was Thiess's first D8. It had been walked from Brisbane to the site as there was nothing capable of transporting it available at that time. Some of the mountain ranges they had to cross were so steep and the load they were pulling so heavy, they didn't dare touch the steering clutches, so one person walked along side and placed cactus leaves under a tyre to spin the wheel and get them to turn in the desired direction. They had to carry all fuel, spare parts and personall provisions needed for the trip.
A couple of years back a memorial was dedicated at a park about halfway along Heifer Creek Road thanking the workers on this project. Among photos on display are a couple of the scrapers.
And myself, I still have traces of calluses between my index and middle fingers of my left hand from many years of that electric steering (111a)
Have a good day....John Baxter.

Is that Blair Athol in Adelaide, Rumbles? If it is, that would have been one hell of a trip in those days.

B70

Greeniron,
There was a B70 Wabco and we had a fleet of them working at Greenbushes many years ago.The early ones had toggle switch steering but the later ones had a steering wheel.Same setup though just gave you something to hang onto. These were cable bowl.apron and ejector with electric steering.Powered by a 12V71N Detroit with an 8 speed allison. Those 333`s look like they used the same primemover.I will try to find some pics but I am not making promises.

Just thought I would reply and give a big thanks to Malcolm and Wabcoman for such great photos...keep them coming..such a great bit of earthmoving history with the 333's in NZ...I have photos of machines working in the 80's but must do a test run on posting pictures...also photos current with one machine working with Goodmans...great to also spend a few hours running the machine...nothing like the twin V12's with 950hp....Regards..Ray

229, Harrison, Canberra, Australia. 2006. This machine is still being worked to this day by it's owner. I have been told it is the most reliable scraper around town. I had a go at operating her one Saturday afternoon. What an experience. Open cab, noise, heat and plenty of grunt. Fantastic.

I think Goodmans have two of Cloutmans machines now. They have been using them on various sites around the Capital, like Churton Park, Whitby and just north of Upper Hutt. One was at their base in Waikanae mid-January in the workshop.

Not sure whether they are back out working at the moment

Interesting scrapers as I have never seen a twin. It looks like the elevator flghts are alot closer together than Cat's I suppose that has to do with elevator speed. Also looks like a drive motor on each side, I bet they have good elevator power. I'd like to see one working
