Hey guys, Just a quick one. Since dirt works has come to a halt, with over 3 feet of snow on the ground, Im running a sewer machine. My question is what do you do about the constant clank of the swivel hook and little piece of chain that hangs off the eye. If you know what i mean. For me i hate listening to it, but the boys got awful tired of taking it off just to put it back on a minute later. There used to the sounds, but i absolutely hate it. I was thinking of rapping a couple pieces of small rubber and zip tying them on. Or do you sewer boys just get used to it over time? Any ideas would be truly appreciated.
Cheers

Imagine a D ring with chain/cable smacking the bucket all day. The first company I worked for had that for a safety system on all machines equipped with quick couplers. All our lifting was done off of a permenant hook on our quick couplers. Policy was also to take the bucket off when lifting anything.

Ive worked for places that just hang a hook, and i really dont care for the system. Ive heard stories of the hook getting pinched in linkages, or on things. When ever possible I try to take them off, but around here it seems they stay on so long they rust to a point where you cant turn them loose. I hate them for working in tight quarters. I actually had one hook onto an underground electric service. No damage, but enough to wake up everyone working around us. But knowing most sewer rats, your gonna have to live with it.

You must not run a sewer machine. Or, have any inclination for safety. In my opinion.

well there, skippy. thanks for calling me out. i have worked on more than my share of sewer crews and i am more safety consious than most operators that i know. the ear plug comment was sarcasm. kinda my way of saying "deal with it"
that clank is a good alert for the top and bottom man,and although annoying, it is useful for the loader man too. it signals him to wake up!:D

Are cranked up in-cab radios unsafe, too?

But make sure you use a decent sized one with a robust safety catch, its suprising how many operators manage to break the safety catch off em :Banghead

Took the words right out of my mouth. The welded ones are great, but are unsafe for that reason. Get used to the banging, the guys in the trench are used to it.
