Hey guys I’ve been looking to get a dump truck as we have some work for one
First is a 98 international paystar 5000 triple axle with a 16’ aluminum box and walking beam suspension It has the dt 530 engine with a 10 speed The truck looks really clean but has almost 800,000 miles on it.

Second one is a 96 kw T800 triple axle with a 17’6” steel box and is air ride this one’s got a Cummins n14 with a 9 speed Its in nice shape as well for its age and also has around 800,000 miles. Both trucks have had some minor work done but no paperwork for anything major which makes me a bit nervous on them
There both priced the same just shy of 30 grand
Any insight would be great
Thanks

Where is this truck going to be used? If you haven't experienced the difference between a walking beam and a air ride suspension you won't believe the stories. Air ride is vastly superior on the road, walking beam vastly superior off road.

Terex herder has the question of the day here. Your intended use is going to dictate what you need for a truck. A site truck is totally different than a delivery or asphalt truck.

Personally, I wouldn't want a aluminum bed, but the guys here haul a lot of shot rock and stacking rocks, and that tears up a aluminum bed.

The trucks gonna haul gravel, rock, dirt and some demo every once in awhile. I was leaning towards the kw cause on the engine but the international seems way cleaner

I'd say the KW has a lot more going for it. Don't be afraid of the air ride, just have respect for it when the box is up. The longer steel box will swallow a lot more debris. I noticed a big difference between a 15 and 16 foot box, even though the 15 footer had higher sides. Does it have a high lift tailgate? The T800s I've driven rode pretty good on the front but had walking beams. I imagine it would ride like a Cadillac with air ride under the back.

The tailgate is the same height as the box sides

I own a 1990 International 4900 with DT466, and a 2007 Kenworth T800 with Cat engine, steel box, drop down axle, and walking beam suspension. I will say the Kenworth is a real dump truck for sure. But it's really too big for just residential work. It also cost a fortune to maintain and operate. The yearly registration is a lot, and we have it only licensed to 70,000lbs. Insurance is a lot. We pay heavy Hwy tax even though we don't go interstate or on highways. Parts are super expensive. Great if you can do most of the repairs like many of the guys on this web site. You need to be an expert at fixing air leaks, hydraulic leaks, and suspension. You need a CDL and medical. You need good employee's with CDL in good standing and in good health and who may also be able to other things for your Company. Was the Kenworth a tractor? What are the axle ratings? Does it have a steerable drop down axle? Pintle hitch in the rear with air?

We’ll do most work ourselves on the truck. I’d assume the kw was a semi made into a dump. It has a 12,000 front axle and 43,500 rears with the pusher It is steerable and has a Pintle with hook ups on the rear

A high lift gate isn't about the height of the gate. A high lift has long arms on top with the top hinge about 3 ft foreward.

WWW.
25,000 lb steer axle, 25,000 lb drop axle, 55,000 lb rears on HaulMaxx, twin steering boxes,
625 hp at 2050 torque, rtlo22313 speed, 1/2" frame rails, with full entertainment center and
a Keurig coffee maker. 20' box with super high lift.

A permanent thread should be started for the twice a month dump truck questions.
With a list of preferred power, transmissions, suspensions, type of box and cost range.

I really don't see why everyone craps on air ride. I haven't seen a dump truck or logging truck built in the last 20 years that wasn't air ride.

My brothers 2020 Western Star dump is spring suspension. However it was speced like whoever did it was smoking something, so it's not saying a lot. I have no issues with air ride though, the advantages far outweigh the bad.
