Thread discussion move. It turned to towing.
Below is a photo of a Continental unit built by Continental Towing L.A. I operated one just like it only it was
a KW. This Pete is still being used just up the road from me in Dayton. 60 ton boom line with 40 ton deck.
Winches were operated mechanically by a Brown Lipe 4 spd pto with reverser. Continental built lots of these.

A recovery that did not end well for the tow company. The main problem the wheel from the contractor that was building the mine in spring 2011 was a short know it all man ( if he would be 6 inches shorter he would be perfectly round) and took charge. In the 3 hrs I was watching I knew that the crane that was near truck was in wrong spot to close to truck it was there when I arrived. The 2 guys on wreckers were beyond there skill level and did not used their brains at all in the end the broke the boom on the big wrecker. Man did that ever make a super load snap when it let go.

A rule I've had and was told by the owner of D&M Towing-Don Johnson.
When your in the tow truck your representing me and my insurance.
Your in charge of the situation. If they don't like it leave. It's my equipment
my company I don't need every job.

It was mentioned in the other threads about pulling from the side. When Holmes converted the 850 to
the 1801 the key element was the design of the winch house/mast head. No body else building squirt
boom recovery units had it and most still don't. There is no need to add side pull winches to the Holmes
lineup. Cables could be moved from boom and pull from the side directly off the mast head. The 850 with
a added 40 deck winch is a power house, still one of the most sought after in towing circles, Holmes was
bought out by Challenger and Challenger makes good stuff but not like the 1801.

The towing business I use to work for had a Kenworth with a 50 ton Challenger, it was a impressive unit.
But the real monster was the 1989 GMC General-8V92 13 spd with 2spd rears on Hendrickson 52K
suspension. Equipped with a Holmes 1801 from day one. It had hydraulic swing out stiff legs off the
mast head with a 25K winches mounted on top so it had a radius. The two standard boom winches
plus a 30 ton deck winch. With hydraulic rear spades. Five winches. The white winch house in photo
is of the 850 Holmes.

Interesting reading the specs and inner workings of those wreckers.
Noticed the paragraph on owner or commercial frame reinforcing being not acceptable.
After seeing some of Truck Shops frame work on the Mack i might be a bit offended if i were him.

That's just a disclaimer for Homes protection, kind of like {do not drill} stickers on frames.
The manufactures know the first thing that's going to happen is someone will start drilling.
