The top one looks like the ignition module. There is another module in the distributor.
They cant be tested the manual says test with a known good replacement.
Wrecking yard should have the module. there were a few different ones. If I remember
correctly if the plugs are the same as the one you have you are good to go.
I would swap out the ignition module first as its easier. Make sure the wiring is good first.
The second pic looks like a voltage regulator.

My local NAPA store has a tester for the ignition module. There is some kind of pickup in the distributor that tells it when to fire.

I learned all this when chasing a ghost in one of these. In the end, it was the distributor bushing causing the magnet thing to crash into the pickup thing in the distributor.

People before me had spent all kinds of time and money changing other parts first.

Ignition modules and distributor pick up coils are a common source of "irritation" on those....lets not forget the damned timing belt.
As mentioned, you go thru a Fords 27 step test procedure, go buy a another case of beer only to read "test with known good part".

I have taken care of dozens of these on generators over the years and the only one that had any real ignition failure was the one mentioned above, new distributor took care of it.

A few timing belts but those are easy to fix, otherwise I consider them a very good engine.

Does anyone know which wires should be hot going into it? atleast then I could confirm that. Does coil get power when ignition is on?

Any time on a older ford when you have no spark replace the module with the spare one. Allways have a spare on hand . Just before 9/11 the goverment was going to check in to several auto motive things ford modules were one of them to see if there needed to be recalls . But 9/11 put a stop to that.
