Case 580c Gland removal.

Want to reseal the Dipper cylinder. Unable to see the set screw head. So we drilled it out. If we try to remove the Gland and there is a piece of the set screw in there what damage will we do?

There shouldn't be any damage if you drilled the screw out, it's only about 1/2 deep and just screws into the end of the gland

You may be okay, but set screws are usually a hardended high carbon material. If you drilled it out smaller than the full outer diameter (to preserve the threads), it could get sideways in there when you are unthreading. The gland being made of softer cast iron could get damage.

I checked the parts book and the screws are only 1/4 long, half of the screws in my machine were already sheared off when I rebuilt them, the set screw will be the least of your problems. Getting the gland out, the rod out of the cylinder and the piston bolt are the fun part..
