I need to figure out some how ruffly what it would cost to move the caboose i want to sell so i can tell who ever is interested in it what there up aginst. I have talked to some guys that could move it but they will not give me any thing to go on because of to many unknowns. I may have to sell it with the land if it comes down to that. I think i can nail down a crane to load it locally but the trucking and a crane at the other end? In a way this shouldnt be my job but it will grease the wheels of progress. I may have to travel around to the guys that can move it and offer to pay for there time on making out a estimate.

I call a house mover that lives near by . He said $10.000.00 for the first 20 miles then $30.00 a mile after that. The price would be to set it on wheels move it then set it back on the ground. That seems high but there wouldnt be a crane bill at ether end.

2,500-4,500 for the cranes and probably around the same to a little less amount for the trucking- depending on how far everything has to travel.

I would think $7,000- $10,000 would cover the move. So it wouldn't be a lot different for having cranes do it or the house mover. All depends on site access on each end, and how far you need to go. And really- anyone looking at moving one, should have enough money that the difference in 5k or 10 k in the move, isn't the hold up. If they don't have 10k for the move, they shouldn't be buying a caboose.

The reason most guys don't want to give a estimate, is that everyone just wants to "kick the tires" so to speak on the project, and never end up doing it. Of all the caboose/ railroad car moves I've looked at- I think 1 in 10 have actually happened, and of the other jobs I look at - I end up doing close to 80% of them.

This caboose has brought the crazys out. My brother keeps wanting to put up a for sale sign that would be a mess . Hopefully i never get into a deal like this agin but if i do and i need to get prices i will make sure i get money up front to pay the guys trying to figure out prices. I never thought this would be the deal it has become.

Spud_Monkey Express, coming soon, for a new house in Montana! That'd give you another few seasons to get the pole barn attic done...

I moved one a few years ago, I don't remember what we charged, the recently deceased owner was a friend of the crane owner and I, and we moved it for his daughter. I posted some pics on here somewhere.

It was no big deal, we did it in one day with a single axle Mack with a dropdeck trailer, a Grove TMS 250, a couple of service trucks and 4 men. It was something like 10 or 12 feet wide, 50 feet long, and the height was legal (or close enough) with no trucks under it, sitting on a dropdeck. It was not very heavy. It was about 50 miles on state 2 lane highways. I used the single axle because it was very tight coming out and going in the driveways. I imagine I was overweight with that tractor, but that little Mack had seen worse.

I pulled out and went about 3 miles and met a Deputy driving down the yellow line slowly with all his lights on. Turns out he was escorting a house! We turned the crane and service trucks around in a gravel drive, and I backed the caboose a couple of miles to a trailer park entrance, where we drank coffee and waited on them to go by. It's not everyday a train has to pull over for a house to go by on a public highway!

Significant Other?

There's a caboose down here in a scrap yard, guy thinks it's gold. A friend knows the history, it was free the first time it changed hands, had a few owners since and current owner thinks it's a $40K bit of treasure. He's had it a long time, it's looking sorrier and sorrier as the years pass.

They just scrapped one here in town a year or two ago, property owner wanted it gone, and didn't want to wait for a buyer- instead of just lookers. It wasn't in great shape, but still had the trucks under it.

Asking for a friend, curious how this caboose looks like, dimensions of it and weight. Just asking for a friend...
I dont think i have any resent pictures of it. Its a Rock Island 34 feet long, 13' 6" tall with the steps 112" wide at the bottom but the top coppola its 129" wide. We dont have the wheel sets with it. From what i have tryed to find out it weighs between 15 and 20 tons.

Yeah, some pics and some background, like how come you own a caboose you want rid of?

Mrs. Spud wants to know & I'm curious too.

Dad worked for The Rock he bought it from some guys that did work for the RR. They moved it about 30 miles just before they retiered. They hauled it on its side they turned it up right. Dad sold that farm and a friend moved it across the road to a one acre lot Dad owned. This friend was Dads age and has pass on. None of us want it and i want to down size Dads stuff and sell the lot its on.
