I find it difficult to believe the prices of 50 year old large cat dozers, in this high cost fuel market as well as the restrictive emissions regs. And saying nothing about the high hours and fatigue on some of those parts. I've seen some of the same machines listed for quite a few years now. I wonder when that bubble will burst?

Yeah but many of them are just worn out junkers, and need tons of expensive work. Its not like they are all Cat certified reman machines. It reminds me of some of the older collector car folks that think they have a gold mine, of moss covered rusted out hulks for many thousands of dollars, thinking it only needs a coat of paint to be sold at one of those auctions for a 100,000 bucks. In the last 50 years those old dozers have paid for themselves how many times over? And yeah monopoly money right on.
The day you can have them all for free is the day the dozers can't do any work of worth .

It is not that the prices of these machines have gone up - it is due to inflation and your money being worth less today then two years ago (if you know what I mean).

I'm just happy that there are other manufacturers besides cat.
And the cost of the operator of a torch and the gas to cut it up into the correct size for the scrap yard. I know of people in the airplane world that have had to pay some decent $ just to scrap the plane. No $ in scrap when you have to reduce it too scrap.
Price gone up? No on some it just stays at or close to the brand new price.

Have you priced a new dozer of any make in the same size range? And how many of those do you think will still be operable/rebuildable 50 years from now?

I have forty year old electronic excavators in my customer base. That's only Dash 3 Komatsu units. I haven't found one that I can't make work so far.
The other aspect is training for new mechanics will likely include plenty of electronics training plus the electronics packages may be self diagnostic and self healing in forty years.

one of the many wonderful things about the old gear, all electronics on them if they have any are easy enough to rebuild
I have 3 50 year old machines 2 in good running order one of them did 85 hours in the last 3 weeks and the other not far behind
Yes they like a bit of TLC to keep them running but generally dont let me down as a rule yes they can be a bit pricey to purchase given their age but I swear they shift as much dirt as comparable weight machines - which pisses off a few people.
Not only that but man they are fun to operate!
Electronics and easy to rebuild (all in one sentence). Have you ever watched Louis Rossman and his Right to Repair videos on youtube? Then what your saying is places like Caterpillar are freely supplying owners of machines etc. all the schematics and repair information on all of their "Black Boxes" (like ECU's and other controllers)? Yes you know just like a service manual for an engine or other cat mechanical component. So are such things available for the electronics components on Cat machines? Its not on John Deere as far as I know.
