CAT D4D aquistion

Hello from Down Under. Recently acquired what is most likely a 1968 CAT D4D Ser # 85A891 (TBC). It should arrive in a wk or so. Previous dozer was a AC HD11 but it was sent from the field of play for misbehaving, gear box & final drives decided it was their turn to retire. Not sure what the donk is in this D4D, could be D330 or D330C, will have to wait to see if the fan is belt or gear drive. Walking gear looks in good nick, ukn condition of clutch(s), brakes etc. Has been working lightly timbered, flat, sandy country in central SW Queensland. I'll use it to clear lightly timbered fence lines, fire breaks & knock down 30m high ironbarks after I mount the 105mm M2A2 my Daddy brought back from SVN. 1968 D4D Surat 1.png 1968 D4D Surat 2 - Copy_LI.jpg 1968 D4D Surat 3.png 1968 D4D Surat 4.png Thinking about getting some rippers, but unsure if there is enough grunt in '68 D4D for rippers?

Yes, they were all 65hp until much later on with probably the introduction of the 3304. We had one with a D330C engine, 65hp was enough, ours was powershift though, had an identical canopy, except ours had an extension on the rear.

A canopy like this one? I like the rear extension, it would provide extra operator protection. Maybe some hvy gauge screens on the sides & rear also for more operator protection too.D4D 49J 3.jpg

A question on steering the 1968 D4D please. Should the D4D respond with positive steering changes with the steering clutches only, or does it require a combination of both steering clutch & foot brake?

I saw this comment on another forum where the discussion was about D4D steering & brake problems - 'You need to apply the brake to make a turn,as well as pull clutch to stop power to the side.No connection of steering clutch to brakes like the newer stuff. You probably knew this, but has been missed before.'

I also read in another forum the following comment - 'when doing a turn, always pull on clutch lever first then apply foot brake, never apply foot brake first then pull on clutch lever, and never just use foot brake, always clutch lever first then foot brake'

Anyone care to comment please?

Sappers? Yes, I know a little bit about them. If your a Grunt & your filthy, cold, wet & hungry & you want a hot shower, a cold beer or a goffa, a steak & fresh salad then seek out & close with the nearest Sapper camp. They are also good for blowing nasty stuff up & slipping down tunnels with a light & handgun to have a peek-a-boo. ;)
