Just heard about a diesel shortage?

California is getting close to Europe diesel prices. Watching the giro d'italia and at one station diesel was 1.80 euro per liter, about $7.09 per gallon. It used to be that Europe was much more expensive than the US for fuel.
In UK today here was £1.83/litre or £7.32/US gallon, that is $9.00 a gallon. Since April 1st cannot use rebated -tax diesel (red) in anything other than farm or forestry work. So a lot of adjustment needed by construction and generator users.

The transportation industry alone consumed 122 million gallons of diesel per day in 2020.
I can't see how we can go on consuming this amount of fuel indefinitely. It's a blunt way of implementing change, but I'm sure we will see some changes certainly here in UK with $9/gal fuel. Innovation lead by necessity. Hopefully in a useful and not detrimental direction.

It’s a topic for another thread but you aren’t meeting the energy requirements of trucking, construction or farming with battery or hydrogen.

another factor is the same idiots who think everything internal combustion can and will be replaced by so called “green” technology are the same idiots doing everything they can to destroy power generation.

If the world in large stopped buying Russian fuel that has an impact on fuel scarcity

The real question becomes is this a reaction to an inflated weaker us dollar for the amount of currency in circulation it would occur to me that this is a market reaction a weaker purchase power in the dollar

Cummins has a 18 liter hydrogen engine in a Diamler/Freightshaker on the road as a testbed currently. 18 liters, less than 1000 ft/lbs of torque and 270hp. Yeah, sounds like a real replacement. Just what Americans want, less torque and horsepower. Back to 15 and 18 speeds and miles long traffic backed up behind one semi pulling uphill.
I mean, good for Cummins for at least trying to get ahead of it. Unfortunately, it sounds like there's a ways to go. Time will tell...

If the average 737 has about 6000 gallons (maybe more or less), I just saw on a web site that just american airlines runs about 5000 flights a day. So add up the others as well. Yes not all are consuming 6000 gallons per flight but it still beats the diesel number hugely.

the issue with hydrogen is currently it takes as much or more energy (I think at this point it’s more) to produce as it provides. Like “sustainable fusion reactions” hydrogen power has been “just around the corner” for many decades.

at this point the research for “hydrogen power” is more or less grant farming and then there is no shortage of scammers looking to take potential investors (anything to do with “the miracle of blue gas” will be the latter)

Just released on News services, EPA going to Fix in place Derate rules for DEF Systems so will no longer be a Hazard to motoring when these monsters and RVs lose their minds as to the DEF systems. Most severe derate will be 50mph not 5, if can still see adequate emissions levels by sensors will only be a audible/visual warning and NO derating. Just have to get Mfrs to reprogram the processors to these parameters and establish that coding.

But isn't standard procedure to leave full and dump remaining excess fuel prior to landing? I remember reading that somewhere. Thought it to be asinine when I read it.

That is good news. So as long as HC particulate is ok, NOx will just annoy you with a moderate derate vs a forced idle?

I'm sure others will chime in. From what I was told by a pilot, pre-flight fuel load is determined based on flight route and calculated weight of cargo (passengers and bags), plus a percent extra. He said the planes almost never leave full, as that becomes extra weight they have to move, burning even more fuel on take off.

In 2012, I was on a flight from Denver to Grand Rapids, MI. We boarded, taxi out to runway, and then sat for 90 minutes on a siding, waiting for clearance to take off. Pilot comes on, says we burned too much fuel waiting and we now have to go back to a gate and take on more fuel and that's what we did. The fuel truck wasn't hooked up 5 minutes and he said "we're good to go" and away we went. I don't know what the fuel fill rate was, but that seemed awfully fast to me.

As for fuel prices, I added a surcharge for customers outside a 20 mile radius from my house. $4.50/gallon for regular 87, $5.50/gallon for diesel now.

I've been looking for a tandem dump truck still, and I'm starting to see prices trickle back down from their crazy highs last year. Everyone thought their clapped out, rust jacked, municipal single axle was worth over $10,000 last year, no matter what. Now they're listing for half that or less, where they were in 2019.

Just in time freight is starting to see some changes caused by the fuel issue. The biggest waste is LTL shipping.
Trucks running around without a full load on is a total waste of fuel and tires. I have to have to day freight is
killing the buyer.

If they are over landing weight they will dump fuel. Jet aircraft are huge raw fuel polluters, and consumers. All that seems to be hush hush though, as well as the true price of the fuel, that all us help finance with our inflated prices on fuel.

Hydrogen? Everyone says that hydrogen fuel cells are way more efficient at using hydrogen than is a fuel burning engine.
