CAT 299C Parking Brake Stuck

Hello. I recently purchased a CAT 299C and have run it about 2-3 hours. It seems to be great so far. I love it. Very happy to have this machine as an upgrade to an old wheeled Bobcat I was using. I'm using it fairly lightly for odd jobs around my homestead for now.

Anyway, I have an intermittent issue with the parking brake not disengaging. At least the light isn't turning off and can't move. I say that because I don't know if the parking brake is actually disengaging and signal is not getting to the computer or if the parking brake is hanging up.

Symptom: After pushing the parking brake button, parking light remains lit. After a few presses the orange driver alert light flashes. Sometimes it actually works the first try, sometimes it takes pushing it 20-30 times. Sometimes the driver alert light goes off after a bit especially if I hold the parking button in for 5-10 seconds. I've been lucky and been able to get it to disengage eventually, but I'm not comfortable letting this problem go on too long as I don't want to get stuck somewhere when I really need it.

So I've been searching the internet for guidance, but most of what I've found is for other machines. I am a little shocked the service manual is so expensive for this machine. I'm hoping that someone here with access to that stuff or more experience would be willing to share any tips on troubleshooting. Any help is very appreciated!

Serial #: CAT0299CAJSP02200

I have this display, but not sure if it's possible to pull error codes from it, so I'm interested to know if that's possible.

Sorry, no. Only the Advanced Display (illustrated below) can show Diagnostic Codes on the machine. That display is an optional attachment and is only fitted (or can be retrofitted if it was not specced when a particular machine was originally built) to D-Series machines.

Darn. Thank you so much for your quick response.

I'm a long way from any CAT dealer and have no way to transport the machine. Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips for a stuck parking brake?

Hey Nige, that definitely applies to D series, but this is a C-series.

That display should have diagnostic capabilities... maybe someone can post Using the Operator Monitor to Determine Diagnostic Codes (KENR5119-05)

I thought I said the Advanced Display was only applicable to D-Series..?

Good point. I was sure that a C-Series needed ET to show Diagnostic Codes. See attached.

Well you did... it was just passed my bedtime when I replied :):)

Jason, be sure to post any active and logged codes you can find.

Hi Guys. I got into the service menu with the attached pdf from Nige - Thank you so much!
As far as I can tell, I'm getting a code of 70-3 from Service Mode 1. There are other codes visible in the other Service Modes, but I'm not sure how to read them. The 70-3 code did come and go whenever the parking brake got stuck and the Driver Alert light was blinking. So I'm fairly confident that's the relevant code.
Any idea what the 70-3 code means?

Park Brake Switch - both switch inputs open circuit nstead of one being open and the other closed to ground.
Diagnostic procedure attached. If you want a full electrical schematic for the machine please ask.

EDIT: Just because this Code is related to the Parking Brake switch don't just assume that the switch is bad and replace it. It could just as easily be a wiring fault or corrosion in a connector which means you would have bought a new switch for nothing.

Thank you so very much Nige!!! I believe I got lucky with my parking brake issue. I decided to inspect the parking brake switch and as I was removing it from the panel, it slightly fell apart. I figured out how to put it back together, but it had 2 potential configurations of the metal bridge inside the switch which short out either side of the circuit during the momentary press of the switch. It was difficult to figure out how it was supposed to go. I used electrical cleaner and got everything looking good and put it back together knowing I had a 50% chance of getting it right. When I plugged it in, not only did the switch appear to be working as I hoped, the parking brake successfully engages and disengages on command!
Thanks to Nige and Chrisso for your tremendous help in troubleshooting and the documentation. You are amazing!

The best repairs are always the one that don’t cost anything...!

If the switch has a tendency to fall apart it may be on its last legs. You could be in for a replacement switch sooner rather than later.

Good points! Before I even went in to troubleshoot the switch, I tried to order one but it's the only switch that I could not find. I was going to try to find any other momentary switch, but after my fix I haven't searched any further. Won't hurt to get one located.
