Hi guys first time thread here so here goes: man I got a mess customer brought me 299d2 dealership said motor locked up (c3.8) I drove it off the trailer (gas on a rag) all the front gears had striped teeth fuel pump, chrank, cam, idler(s). Anyway it would run fine with gas rag so I decided to take to a chance. I replaced the gears flushed engine, fuel tank, fuel lines. Cleaned air system, turbo Replaced all filters set the timing for the crank and cam and got the fuel pump timing close just by guessing.it did start but the cam walked and rubbed the position senser I felt the cam had a lot of lateral movement how much should it have??? The timing still isn’t right? Hard to tell cause I’m dealing with def issues now it sat for six months before I got the go ahead. First thread is a mess hope I make sense to y’all I’m nervous and anxious

4/5 of 9/10 of f**k all I would have thought. Did you go that far into the motor and pull the cam out for inspection of both it and the cam bearings.? If you didn't maybethat ought to be your next step.

Oh, and a Serial Number will help.

Have fun with the DEF issues. I hope you know about using ONLY distilled water when you go in to clean the DEF tank of anything related to it.?

Yes sir l read y’all threads on def and distilled water and I did not pull cam Haven’t been that schooled in Diesel engines unless it’s like old Chevy 350 and you can get it out and in without remove lifters and eat...

Sorry it took so long to reply. IMHO you rolled the dice and lost. That engine most likely needs to come out and be torn right down.
If it had all sorts of metal particles right throughout the motor from the gear train explosion a thorough cleaning is the only way of fixing it so that it has the best chance of not cr@pping itself again.
Also I'm not sure if that engine has camshaft bushings that are replaceable - a quick look says it does not. If the cam runs directly in the cylinder block then reboring the cam tunnel or a new block might be the only answers. Plus everything else that might be found during the teardown of course.

Nige, I have a 2015 CAT 908M, 1,285 hrs, used for snow only, has nothing to do with this thread, but my question is the 299D2 from the OP, what year ?, how many hours? What would have caused this? Just wondering.........

Maybe others might have a stab at a root cause but from my point of view - f**k knows..........
A WAG would be sh1t maintenance, that's usually what happens to machines this size. Ridden hard by multiple jockeys (none of whom take any responsibility for the mount) then put away wet.

The OP's machine was built March 2016. Current hours were never mentioned.

Hey thanks man look I know the engine really needs to come to look through but customers around here are dirt poor should not even have a machine should have a shovel but anyway I fixed it the reason the camgear hit the senser I did not have it far enough onto the shaft my eyes aren’t like they used to be and o got lucky when I drained the oil I ran magnets through it and found no sign of shrapnel and I think I’m over my def problems thanks for the info democrats have got to have something to do with that DPF crap. Going to retire today I’ll let you guys know by the way what is code ou812

No sir I was jut b**s**££££ about the code anyway got in machine back together finally got the pump timed remember it knocked most of the teeth off the gears ( the little shear pin in the keyway did not shear off) got it running it even asked for a re- gen so I know it was running fairly well but I felt and heard something in the back it was not right you know so I shut her down in my investigation I found the pump was trying to lock up the guys at d**£*££ and electric said it was good but I guess not but it didn’t destroy anything I got it **** down in time I have pulled the valve cover to set the tdc (hey what cylinder is #1) and I’m going to pull the pump and get a new one or reman or rebuild this one and I should be good thanks Mr nights
