That is nationwide now you need to have so many school hours to get a CDL.

The law was supposed to go into effect February 1, 2020. VT Governor froze that two years. My older son just got his CDL, took two trips. He arrived with my 28000 LB GVWR truck & 10000 GVWR trailer. The law says "OVER 10,000" The tester turned him away.
He needed to board a commercial airline a few weeks later. VT takes your driver's license, gives you a 8-1/2x11 paper substitute. In their sweet time, they send a new one. He scheduled a retest after his trip.
Next test was successful. As my truck is automatic, he didn't get an endorsement for manual transmission. He is scheduled to retest in December for manual transmission endorsement.

I expect the driver shortage to get even worse after the school requirement becomes permanent law.

There aren't enough truck drivers, so lets make the requirements and regulations even more daunting. Then when there is a crisis, the hours of service regs get suspended. Which goes to prove the hours of service regs are a full employment regulation, not a safety regulation. How does a hours of service suspension work with the in cab recorders?

DMiller if you make the trip, it sounds like you might be busy but if not, holler out (275.1204). I’m not a coffee drinker but would sure set you up with something to drink. Hopefully not this week. Tomorrow painting a neighbor’s ramp. Then helping a friend move old equipment from Bluff to Potosi the rest of the week.

Ontario is the same - we have had minimum entry level training for a few years now. Glad I got my A class before that came in to effect. It's over $10k, and 6 weeks to get your class A.

We're not a huge fleet, and my main driver just turned 73. Lot less BS with the older guys. Just pay em what they want, and make sure the truck is maintained well. Don't have to babysit them. Can't say the same for a lot of the younger guys.

That said, one of our labourers (20 year old) was keen to get his Class A, but my insurance said they'd drop the fleet if we added anyone under 25. Not sure how they expect the industry to succession plan if we can't get insurance.

Thats ok I really really don't care haha I knew that would get a response. I know a fellow who is a year or 2 younger then me owns his own truck and lowboy that pedals around equipment.

I'm sure there are "one offs," but most insurance companies make the call at 25. Now, 55 years ago, I knew of a fellow driving an off highway log truck. No insurance and nobody cared. If anybody got hurt, it would be the driver and the 1948 Mack. But, times have changed. And no, I didn't get hurt. I was 14. and the haul was only 5 miles.

When they do that to Trucking, KATIE Bar the Door!!!

Nuke working ours restriction went the route of Driver Limits for Station Operators as I was. 16/24 26/48, 72/7days for hours, a minimum 10 hours off between shifts, 34 hour break(Consecutive) every Nine days. Are several rules adjustments recently so I do not have them all. Then comes refueling outages and can only work outside restrictions for a total of 60 days.

Talking about the "driver shortage," about a month ago, I read where someone probably some university, went to every state in the union and got a count of those holding CDLs. What they found was at that point in time, there were 3.7 CDLs held for every truck on the road across the nation. So, there is no "driver shortage." They also found that at the infamous port of LA drivers pay has been cut 5% from a year ago. The drivers have underbid each other and driven the price down. Now, drivers are again walking away fro the work due to low pay. As the observer pointed out, there is a wage shortage. But, when you get hundreds competing for the same load, the brokers can drive the price down to where it is cheaper to park the truck.

I drive every day but it is for a specific bit of work, I don't contribute either. I dropped interstate and went with the intrastate on my license. If the company bids a job in Portland they are out of luck!
As I drove home up the hill, I was reminded of why the car drivers might behave like they do. I can see what is going on and they are stuck blocked by me, not knowing that I am not the hold up.
