Case 1845C Steering issue

I finally got my 1845C operating. I don't have any history on it because the P/O got it half stripped, radiator and whatever else was worth anything. I'm having a issue with steering, it bucks and jerks when I use the right stick. I removed the seat and blocked it up and used my hands to move the control levers on the pump and if you move the right side just a touch the wheels go full speed in the direction pushed, if you bring it back to neutral the wheels jump back in the other direction. I don't know if there is an internal adjustment for this or not. Maybe there is something I could adjust or look at while the pump is in the machine? It pushes strong going forward, just the right side bucks like a bull when trying to do precise maneuvers. Its not the linkage or the springs on the pump or control rods, checked them all.

I’m having a similar issue. My steering is very sensitive after I fixed an o-ring leak in the top of the hydraulic pump. I’m guessing I’ve got something out of adjustment.

I would take a close look at item 19 below - for the RH servo.
If they have been operated while the retaining nut #18 has been loose, the square edge of the slot in the linkage arm can get worn & the servo spool #26 is not properly controlled.
In saying that, make sure #18 is tight as is #20
Also, is spring #23 in place & not broken?

Start with the simple things first. ;)

The springs are good and the nut wasn't loose. The spool shaft has no play with the lever. What is #16 ? I'm thinking it's only a seal. Maybe something bypassing. I'd pull the spool if I knew where to find the kit with just the Orings. I saw loader parts source.

#16 is the servo piston.
This is what actually controls the swashplate - which controls oil flow & travel speed. There are seals fitted to it.
It's possible the piston is sticking in it's bore, thus creating jerky controls - usually when this happens the bore is scored by foreign material - so more work is required to actually fix the real problem, the source of the foreign material.

The drive motor mounting bolts are tight?
Chain tensions are OK? (there are 3 x chains in each side of the machine)

Chains are tight, drive motor is tight.. the middle sprocket bearings are good too and New! I think this is what blew the old needle bearings out. You can move the spool valve just a touch and its wide open turning, the other side is smooth. The machine has sat for awhile but I changed the hoses from the tank to the main hydrostatic pump without contamination from foreign material. I'd assume this is what made them park it before the guy I got it from had it. I'm willing to bet it's between that spool or the piston. I'm wondering would a leaking spool Oring cause a jerky motion when operating. Almost like it's sticking or the fluid flow is not controlled when I move that side.

A leaky spool oring will only cause the spool to leak oil, never had one affect the drive.
There are some threaded studs with lock nuts which are visible on the side covers of the servo piston - do they look like they have been tampered with?

ALR, It has been going on 8 years since I have hung up the wrenches but isn't #30 located by a notch on the bottom which locates it and keeps it from turning, it would be an easy enough thing to check, maybe something got out of place allowing the modulation to be off.

Hi @melben Yes, it's possible, anything could be..... those sleeves are often tight to remove.
But if someone put it back together without knowing what they were doing, there could be something going on there.
My gut feeling is sticky servo piston, but hey, were flying blind here on the interweb.....

Nothing has been tampered with that I can tell. If I pull this pump I might as well rebuild it. I don't feel like wasting 10 more gallons of that yellow gold. I'll play with it after my belt comes in Monday. Ups pulled a fast one on me today. Said it was being delivered before 9pm then changed it to Monday lol. I took my pump off and everything waiting on them.

Hello CaboverPacman y’all, I’ve got a similar problem with my 97 1840. Did you find out what the problem was? The right side moves nice and smooth but the left likes to go full speed or nothing very jerky. There is an adjustment on the side of the pump with a locking seal nut.?
