Newbie with 1978 JD410 (Expect to see me here a lot with questions!)

I would like to see the $31 wrench from sears! I will tell you that I have amassed a large amount of over sized tools since owning heavy old equipment and it never fails, you can own a pair of 15/16", 1", 1 1/16", 1 1/8", 1 3/16", 1 1/4" & 1 1/2" and you have to get into some trouble with your...

Karl, I have the 410's big brother, the 510. I had a blow out on the same line you are working on. The set up is just slightly different but similar enough. The crow foot might be good but I used a simple open end wrench and came in through the top. I did have to move a few things out of the...

I thank everyone for the help. I always get the direction to help me find the way.

Leak at Hydraulic Pump Shaft - 510 JD Backhoe/Loader

It drove just fine and let me follow up with I am an idiot. I went and picked up 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid and started pouring. It took 5 to get back to the middle of my okay marks. I started it up and increased the RPM's as the pump kicked in. I then grabbed the loader bucket lever and...

Leak at Hydraulic Pump Shaft - 510 JD Backhoe/Loader

I went back to look for extra damage and to get a closer look at that steel tube. I cleaned the gunk off of it so I could get a better look. It appears dented but I am not sure that this incident was the cause. I have a photo that is below, I don't know why it keeps going in sideway, but you...

Leak at Hydraulic Pump Shaft - 510 JD Backhoe/Loader

I didn't loose that much fluid. I added about a gallon, gallon and a half of fluid after the repair. I didn't keep track since I also found two wasp nests under the seat when I was filling it and was ducking and dodging those little buggers. As soon as I heard the fluid spray out of the hose...

Leak at Hydraulic Pump Shaft - 510 JD Backhoe/Loader

The other day, I drove over some small trees I had pulled out to re-positioned my self while digging out a massive root ball. As I drove over them, one must have popped up and grabbed the hose running from a t-fitting to the left loader boom cylinder. I head a metallic ping and then fluid...

High Pitch Noise - Just when extending or retracting - JD 510

So call me an idiot... I pulled off the grease fitting, cleaned it, greased it and whoa and behold, no squeak or whine. Of course the machine paid me back for not trusting it and blew a hose 30 mins later.

High Pitch Noise - Just when extending or retracting - JD 510

So I put a stethoscope on everything on the backhoe while operating the boom and dipper. Not the dipper, just the boom. It seems, that it may be a grease issue at the bottom grease fitting. After listening to it with the stethoscope I am about 85% sure it is grease... update coming soon...

High Pitch Noise - Just when extending or retracting - JD 510

Sound is similar going in and out. I will investigate and try to put a video up on YouTube later today. The fluid doesn't doesn't appear foamy or milky.

High Pitch Noise - Just when extending or retracting - JD 510

The fluid level seems ok and is at the bottom quarter of the OK range. I may bring that up to mid way so that I can eliminate it. I am thinking air may be getting sucked in there somehow, possibly in the manifold feeding the boom and dipper.

High Pitch Noise - Just when extending or retracting - JD 510

Hello gentlemen... first off, thanks in advance for any and all comments, everyone is always helpful on this site. I am have a small issue with my John Deere 510 Backhoe/Loader. Everything seems to be working fine, well, fine enough for a nearing 40 year old machine, but I have recently...

    John Deere 510 Backhoe Brakes

Unclehuck, The drain is below the differential. It has the fluid for the rear differential, the brakes, transaxle and pushes fluid into the rest of the system. You hold around 30 but only will drain off 10 or so that is in the transmission and differential area. Also, if you are doing the...

    O-Ring or Loose Fitting

So no cussing was required. It was a nice morning to work so I took my time, replaced all the o-rings that needed to be replaced and the ones that were not leaking but were in the way. (bought a kit so I didn't have to go get individual sizes). Here is the photo, of course it was the bottom...
