Which brand excavator do you like the most?

I've run nothing but CAT, Hitachi, and Volvo so far, and from an operators stand point(because I've never owned one or had to pay out of pocket for maintenance and such), out of the machines I've run, CAT wins hands down for comfort, power, and reliability. Our main problem with our Hitachi's...

    Help me end this...

Idlers deffinately go first. Track rails, track pins, and sprockets are disigned to wear the least amount of iron in the direction that it will be trammed the most, which in most cases would be forward ( idlers in the front, finals to the rear ), so like a dozer, it's not cost efficient to tram...

    m grader

We've had a 16M at our mine now for about a year......We haven't had much luck with it. Granted, it's working 24/7 ( when it's not in the shop...) in a hard rock mine, maintaining heavy haul truck roads through Alaska seasons, but unless we are topping a road with gravel, or scratching smooth...

    For the Cat 5130 fans

Nice pics. we have one that we just bone yarded. We had a 5230 with a 23yrd scoop which is olso in the bone yard. We were growing in size and had to upgrade to Hitachi 3600's with 27yrd scoops and now a Hitachi 5500 with a 40yrd scoop. The bigger equipment is fun but I sure miss those CATs...

Hey Eric, How are those electric shovels for operating? The biggest shovel we have at our mine is a Hitachi 5500 with a 40 yard scoop. We have a couple of Hitachi 3600's that are all hydraulic, which I get along with just fine, but this 5500 is electric over hydraulic. There's no embilical...

Atlas Copco bought out Ingersol Rand a couple of years ago I guess. When they were IR drills, they were all labeled with a DM series number. We had a bigger IR drill, DM something or another...(lol...sorry, not a driller) then a couple of years ago after the conversion, we bought the same...

I lived on a piece of property in Oregon where I worked on the property for the rent. My landlord brought an HD 41 home for me to run. That was the first cat I'd been on that size and she'd sure move some dirt! We were building a resvour on the property. He had an old dragline but it...

    Large dozer blade I.D.

A u-blade on a CAT D10 is rated at 23 yards on a flat without slot dozing. It's deffinately a hogging blade but with duel tilt to turn the corner bits up a little, it can smooth grade nicely. You would want to be set up with more jobs requiring a lot of dirt moved to make the ware and tear of...

    Cat m wreck

Well said, sdPete and JDOFMEMI. When we received our 16M, the CAT rep. said that the main reason for joystick controls in the grader is that they are slowly gearing everything towards remote computer operation. Even our Hitachi 5500 shovel is all electronic over hydraulic. The joysticks no...

    Cat m wreck

Hey AtlasRob, The way figure it, if the right wheels caught on the bridge deck as she went over, flipping the grader completely up side down before letting go, it would have landed cab first, especially if the front wheel hung up a little longer than the rest. If the cab hit first on a...

    Cat m wreck

Another possability is that the blade hand had punched the left front tire through or over the guard rail at a higher rate of speed and came to a stop upon doing so. Being stuck on the guard rail and not wanting to call anyone to save face, desided to try to get himself out on his own. After a...

    Cat m wreck

The Hydraulic lock out on our 16M is a switch you have to manually turn off. But the steering above 20 MPH going to half response is automatically kicked in by the computer when the machine reaches the appropriate speed.

    16M in the Arctic

Hi Randy Krieg. We just received our new 16M at the Ft. Knox Gold Mine near Fairbanks. So far we're loving it. It sure has a heap load of bells and whistles.
