    New Pond location

I would suggest starting with the NRCS. Get them to come out, look, survey, and make recommendations. Still doesn't cost you anything. They can give you a pretty good idea of what you can do and what you can't do. A 20 acre impoundment takes a lot of engineering to do right. Build it...

    Deere 350 Dozer? Opinions?

Having run a JD350 for fencelines, road work, and even a few fire lines, I'd say pass. As others have said, its just too small to do much of what is needed with farm work. For most farm work, a 550 is about as small as I'd go. Really, a D6C or D6D is always what I've considered the perfect...

Adding a suplement to your diesel

I use power services in every tank in every diesel engine I've got. Makes a difference.

    Wacker Neuson Skid Steer

The local Case IH house is a WN dealer because the construction outfit has the skid steer line. I'd sure be interested to hear more about them as some of you guys get some time in them.

Need Advice! Is a track steer a good option for my needs?

A lot of it will depend on what kind of trees we are dealing with here. If you are talking about eastern redcedar, then what you are talking about might work. If you are talking about some other type of juniper that can rootsprout, then cutting won't work. You'll need something that can get...

    Building fire breaks with CTL

It is really a job more suited for a dozer or motor grader. If you don't have one, is rental an option? If you have a blade you can angle on the CTL, it might work. I've never used one, but any blade that can take the ground can be used. To me, the potential downside would be trying to make...

What Size Hoe for Ranch Work

Good luck and hope you enjoy whatever machine you end up with. I would suggest this for a ranch machine: Most ranch machines I know stay on the ranch and aren't moved down a highway much. So Unless the machine is going to be moving often, I wouldn't factor moving into the equation very...

Case IH 1070 vs. Case 730 which tractor should I pick?

All things equal, I'd take the 1070. I've run the bigger models of those same tractors, and I like the 70 series better. Powershift, better power steering, and better A/C. Should have a little more power, and be a little less prone to overheating. But either series were good tractors...

    Legendary Green Steigers?

The quad range had two shifters. The one on the outside had Park, A range, B range, C range and D range. On the inside was R1 and R2 at the bottom, then F1 and F2 a level up, neutral, then F3 and F4 up top. Basically you picked a range, and then you picked a level. You could shift on each...

    Legendary Green Steigers?

If you have ever dealt with any of the other 4WD tractors of the era, you'd appreciate the Steiger. I have a rebranded Case IH (really just a 1000 series Cougar painted red), and it is world's better than some of the other tractors of the time. JD did not make a decent 4WD until they came out...

    Cable vs. hydraulic

Never had to run a cable dozer. Never felt like I missed much, though. I think I'll just stick with the JD750 for now.;)

    Cat D6C auction find

Good advice. The owner likely didn't make the repairs himself because the dozer simply isn't worth what it would cost to fix it. It's a losing investment. If you buy it, you are making the losing investment. And while you do know the UC needs replaced, that's all you know. There could be...

Help me pick a pond maker.

A dozer like the 550 can be used for doing lots of minor work where the transport will take longer than the work. But it is undersized for digging a pond. Run away from the 1150. The tracks are in need of immediate replacement, and they will cost far more than the dozer is worth. That's why...

    Sappling root clearing

Some of that stuff you mentioned will root sprout. If you do anything besides grubbing or root plowing, some of that will re-sprout. If they planted wheat behind it, they would have to come out with a saw every year and cut sprouts to make way for a combine. Combines and tree saplings don't mix.
