    A frame ?

Caster and some toe in are the front end specs. which will keep the wheels running straight. We usually call a hitch like that a tow bar. Here you need safety chains, just like hooking up a trailer.

    Criminally bad judgement

I won't use solid wire on anything that moves, vibrates or flexes which pretty much leaves it to house wiring. (NMD cable) We have to deal with salt here a lot also. If it gets into a joint it can migrate up the wire quite a ways and cause corrosion. Best way to seal a joint I've found...

How do you politely fire unpaid help???

Be honest with him, tell him you think his operator skills are not good enough. Explain to him that even for free he is costing you a lot of money for wear and tear, fuel, breakdowns and lack of production. Offer to let him do laborer jobs if you have some available.

Pros and cons of 5 ton excavators vs. 3.5 ton

A rule of thumb I learned a long time ago is that the cost per yard to move dirt goes down as the size of equipment goes up. Of course this is limited by the ability of the equipment to fit, and not be so large as to hinder operation.

    Welding Lathe made from Bicycle

Jody Colliers Tube channel "Welding Tips and Tricks" is highly recommended. He is a master welder and demonstrates all the techniques for many types of welding and tests and compares welding products.

Welding course suitable for a job in heavy equipment company.

How about taking a general welding course at a community college? This would acquaint you with what all these processes are. Manufacturers use advanced welding processes, mostly GMAW, FCAW, submerged arc and often robots to do these processes. SMAW and GTAW would be used rarely manufacturing...

    Welding Rod

If that hook is to be used to attach rigging to hoist things, which is what it is designed for, I suggest you get a certified welder to do this for you. He will have the correct rod, a capable machine and the skill and judgement to make sure that hook is attached properly. In addition the...

    Which Bulldozer??

Borrow the mini x and clear your 3.5 acres. Buy yourself a farm tractor with a 3pt hitch and a front bucket with a skid steer quick attach for the bucket and you should be good for just about anything. Unless you really just want to own a piece of construction equipment.

    Welding the swing cylinder

This is all true, in addition cast steel can be hard to weld. It is somewhere between steel and cast iron as far as weldability goes.

    Pettibone Forklifts

I remember those. I asked why at one company all the o/s forklifts were Pettibone. An operator told me they were the only 4wd forklift available at the time where the operator could easily see the tips of his forks. (Unlike loaders)
