Farm Work

Here in our area (Northeast), there seems to be a ton of work setting up horse farms. Most of the useful land was used for tract housing back in the dark days, and people starting up horse farms want land cleared, riding arenas made, special soil mixed for the arenas, pastures cleared, etc. Anyone out there work on these types of projects? Seems like they seem to be long term gigs, and maybe lucrative.

Long time gig

I'd jump all over it if I were you. Been on this cattle ranch job since June 07. My problem is that it's 700 miles from home. Good luck.

A friend of ours in northeast CT told us he was spending a few days clearing and building a horse arena. I wouldn't be surprised if more contractors we know bid out that kind of work in the near future with this economy.

What I am finding is that these projects are almost as endless as the Big Dig in Boston. The people never know when to stop, so it is a good long term project, and if nothing else, usually a safe place to park your equipment if it isn't working elsewhere. The horse people are generally good at paying on time, and will also let you quote with a bigger profit margin than let's say someone who wants you to put in a septic tank or sewer system.

cropduster where in the northeast are you? that has a lot to do with what is being done. here in Chester County PA there is plenty of land to go around, and since most is under conservation "horse farms" are usually a logical answer. therefore no homes are ever torn down and nothing fancy is ever really built. We do however build riding rings and it is fairly profitable and usually pretty easy...this is one we completed in March...16 foot cut on one side and an even fill on the other

You know, on site short haul never bothered me, I spent a Saturday morning hauling stone the 2 and a half miles from the quarry I used to work in to the redi-mix plant. THAT WAS NASTY, I got out of the truck at noon, handed the keys to my boss and told him, "You'll fire me before I'll do that again.", and walked off.

suprised he didn't fire you...haha

i hate driving dump truck in general...one or two trips isn't bad but when you haul the same trip 15-20 times a day for a week its enough to drive you crazy...especially when your truck doesn't have a radio and the CB has about a 50' range:Banghead

Nah, I volunteered to drive that day to "help out" and get the stockpile built up. It's really funny because we had some plants farther out that are about an hour and a quarter drive or so, I neverminded that drive because it was long enough, but it was that 10 minute drive that drove me nuts. Besides it never hurts to be the only one in the quarry that operates the crane, and can tear down the crusher blindfolded.:D That comes from buying junk, by the way.

I don't know about in the Us but over here those with horses can be some of the worst people for paying up. A lot won't pay until they want you to do another job.
