The other one is in a pit in the Canadian interior.
Ok, have you seen a picture of the one in the pit, or is it only the same rumor as I have going rounds? If it has the large radiator and left hand cab it is either the Kelsey Bay machine or the other last one built. I also know about one other BU-199 in MMB Eve River that was heavily rebuilt/refurbished in the US mid nineties. Between others it got a sliding cab.
I think I have heard that Saratoga Ventures in Campbell River scrapped one from the Chemainis auction in 2004. That machine was painted red over blue, and my guess is that it was the Mike Graves/AK/Tasmania/BCFP-machine. No tracks of the Kelsey Bay machine though.

I was under the impression that Mike's machine went to the interior as a drag?
I have personally had my hands on the two down here. One is a runner, the other has sadly been robbed for parts.
Is the MMB Eve River machine still operating?

The Eve River machine was cut up in 98 I believe. I was working night shift at the shop and would see the trailers of pieces leaving our boneyard. It was quite sad.

Absolutely horrible especially considering that machine was probably only 15 years old at that time.

I think I got the copy of this fax from Saratoga Ventures. In the bottom you can see date and sender, M&B Kelsey Bay Jan. 25. 1999. So probably it was scrapped at your place and sent to SV, they again wanted some information about the parts.

I have never seen a picture of this machine.

Another qestion is: did M&B actually cut up ALL the long lines about 1998, instead of selling them off? I remember visiting Sproat Lake spring 1999, someone told me all the longlines and highleads were gone. Today it's impossible to find any information on any of the M&B spars after that.
Beside the remains of an old BU-99 used at Sproat in the boneyard of Lemare Lake Logging, 3 Madill 046 longlines from Franklin/Cameron and the Skagits at Kelsey Bay are completely disappeared. They also had quite a few Madill tension skidders around, that just disappeared the same way a couple of years earlier.

Reading that makes the story even sadder. Scrapping was probably ordered by some beancounter to avoid recaptured depreciation. Makes a guy wonder about absolute waste of resources over paperwork.

Just some random thoughts on the issue.

I've seen something like that in the past and wondered how it made sense to cut something up for scrap value which may be as little as one percent of the original cost as opposed to a salvage or basement value which might be as much as twenty percent of the original cost. Surely, your government wouldn't be able to take that entire salvage value as a recapture unless there were funny business on the books before hand. I would think an auditor would be able to recognize scrapping machinery as a red flag that things need to be checked out more carefully.

Maybe i have overstated the recaptured depreciation, it would actually apply to the amount the machine might be sold intact for after it had been written off on the books.Stated simply there seems to be no incentive to save anything under our tax system , even though green this and green that is preached to us all.

I'm not sure that you have overstated it at all. I have been asked to consult on this issue a couple of times here in the states. I believe a tax system has been made far to complex when it encourages the destruction of usable assets only for the purpose bleeding money out of a company.
