A friend of ours is a support tech for Wartsila. He has some interesting stories, especially around the natural gas generator engines.
He started at one of the European cruise lines with the diesels.

About 40 years ago I got a tour of a very large commercial ship. I've forgotten what kind but I won't ever forget seeing a 6 cylinder engine the size of a 2 story house with cylinders more than 3 feet in diameter and manholes to accesess them.

That was one of the things I was so disappointed about the 28 day Pacific cruise wife talked me into a few years back, could not get a tour of the engine room. Were they afraid I might steal the engine for my motorcycle?

I have never seen a ship running old stuff like that so clean. Usually when they get that old there is oil everywhere.

Some Dutch guy has a Youtube channel apparently just dedicated to old marine engines still in service.
Fill your boots.........but you'll need translation software because there are no subtitles on some of the videos.

Had a ride on a old 3 cyl diesel boat in San Francisco. Looked similar but very small. Boat was about 28 feet.

When @Truck Shop mentioned Buda in the memories for truckers thread, I was 'huh' because I had so firmly associated Buda with marine.
Then I educated myself.
Dad and I built a 24' trawler from plans, discarding everything but the hull plan and making it an aft cabin live aboard.
It had a China Marine 3 cylinder 20 HP that was originally an old German design.
Nuk nuk nuk nuk, 7 knots hull speed @ 3 quarts an hour.

I have a vague memory of Buda being manufactured in Hoquim, Washington. I'll have to look that up somewhere. Probably the best museum I've been to for marine diesels is in Astoria, Oregon. There are examples of many of the slow rolling common rail heavy blocked dinosaurs that plied the waters of the Northwestern United States. Love the videos, thanks for posting them.

We took a cruise in 2019 and I posted some pictures of cranes in Rostock Germany. We were docked in Warnemunde. This tugboat the Petersdorf, was the first ship built after the war by a man who went on to build many more. This was in times of very little supply in East Germany, so the boat deck and everywhere you look is patched up with little teeny pieces of steel. They didn't have any big sheets around to weld up and build this thing.
Some locals made a historical society and saved the tug and have kept it running. I happen to wander up to it on the dock and took pictures and got to meet them. Here's a Facebook post with little video of the engine running.

Buda’s are in many an old tractor..
w an American Bosch injection pump.. PSB & PSJ..
They’re still used in some PULL tractors..
The pull tractor guys snatch them up as soon as they come on the market..

Buda in the early years was in trucks tractors and marine, Allis bought them up and nearly every diesel engine they used after was a Buda Design.
