I'm back! Spring is here
First up sometime in early Feb 2021 we had some warm weather, it was like 55 degrees for 3 days straight and the snow began to melt. The water started to run a little early this year (like 2 months!) and the flow was threatening to take out our road..... so the Tak had to come out of winter storage and do some emergency road repairs (ditch clearing)
It saved the day! I was able to keep the water in the drainage ditches and stop it from cutting our road in half.
Takeuchi saved our butts.
Now spring has sprung so I brought the tak around to the shop and gave it a full once over, checked all fluids, track tension, cleaned and lubed the machine. Then I started to pick up right where we left off last fall....moving some dirt! then it happened............ the left hand track stopped responding. Dang!
I lost a final drive. It is locked up solid. The Tak is dead in the water, sitting in field. I now have the track off, we took the cover off the backside of the drive motor housing only to find it packed with sand/mud/clay
WHOOPS! I had no idea that cavity would fill up so badly. So now part of the yearly maintenance will be to clean out the frame/drive motor spaces.
Anyways I was able to remove 3 of the 4 hydraulic lines without issue, the 4th one is rusted badly and is rounding off. So I am planning to replace or repair that hose.
Next step is to take my bolt buster (heat induction tool) and generator over to the disabled Tak and see about removing the bolts that retain the drive motor.
It looks like I will be ordering a new final drive on Monday. I can get them for $1800 and change shipped, two for $3600.....
I am also planning to replace the drive sockets, I figure now is the time.
So my question is, is it best to replace both final drives at the same time or does it really matter? The other side is still working fine ....for now
Im hoping if I spend $3600+ these new motors will last as long as the originals (1998 to 2021!)
