Scott Nickerson has lent us some of his late father Bart (Art) Nickerson's logging photos . There is a story as to how Bart Nickerson was called Art Nickerson at BCFP Renfrew Div. , but I don't know it . Art started driving Gravel Trucks , Logging Trucks for Swan Neva at Lake Cowichan then moved to BCFP Renfrew Div. for the rest of his log hauling years . A very competent driver who always took care of his truck and trailers . In the mid 2004 when Timberwest was selling off TL46 and contracting out their Private Lands , Art took retirement from the Forest Industry and helped his son Scott start Ace Back Hoe in the Cowichan Valley . Art continued to drive Gravel Truck & Pup for Ace Back Hoe until his health wouldn't allow him to .
The first picture is of Art and his sons Scott and Clint standing by his favourite Off Highway Log Truck #6-239 an 1971 HDX Hayes Conventional at BCFP's Gordon River Camp .scan001.jpg

From the documentary “Mystery Mountain Project” What is that truck?? Hmmm

I screenshot it from the show.

My first thought was a Mack but door does not look like a Mack door.

The guy on the right is Andy Lindgren, father of Lance Lindgren, Andy was a much beloved grade foreman at Caycuse, Lance was a Heavy Duty Mechanic how became Master Mechanic if I am not mistaken
Garry Oliver , the Bullbucker from Caycues Div.
His brother Calvin was a Heavy Duty Mechanic at Caycuse

Al asked me to upload some old pictures that I found. They go from the mid 60s through the 80s to 2001 20 years ago. Through the years I have always had great memories of working in Port Renfrew in the 60s and try to make it back when I can. I went back again in 2019 and checked out lens Creek that I had once logged on. Here are the changes over the years........where did the dam time go!!!!

Rob Norman has lent me some pictures . The first group belong to Gordy Goodlad who was a long time Boom boat Operator at BCFP Caycuse Div. The first picture is Caycuse Log Loader Operator Wally Carlson loading the #16-08 a brand new American 7220 Loader ( the second American 7220 for Caycuse Dscan090.jpg iv. ) on to a Spruce Log Raft , for a trip on Lake Cowichan from Honeymoon Bay to Caycuce Camp .

Gordy Goodlad Operating the Caycuse Prince and Calvin Ketch Operating the Renfrew Prince two tugs towing Spruce Raft with #16-8 an American 7220 on board through "The Narrows" on Lake Cowichan from Honeymoon Bay and to Caycuse . Both the Caycuse Prince and the Renfrew Prince were built by John Manly Shipyards at New Westminster B.C. in 1949 I remember the Renfrew Prince at BCFP Renfrew Div. in the mid 1950's . There was at that time two log dumps at Port Renfrew . One on the North arm of the San Juan River that served the Harris Creek Logging Camp . And one on the South Arm of the San Juan River that served the Bear Creek Logging Camp .The Renfrew Prince towed from the Harris Creek Log Dump and the Pachena Prince towed from the Bear Creek Log Dump . Around 1958 when BCFP had bridged the San Juan River to connect the Bear Creek Logging Camp to the Harris Creek M/L and were preparing to shut down the Logging Rail Road from Bear Creek to Beach Camp on the South side of the San Juan River . I remember watching the Renfrew Prince loaded on a Flat Car heading toward the Bear Creek Camp and head of steel , to be transferred to the Youbou Saw Mill . After that the Pachena Prince did all the towing at Renfrew Div. scan094.jpg

Thanks. I just sold the old K5 Blazer about a month ago it was a great bush beater I bought it new. Here is another pic from a long time ago back about 10 years after they shut down the old skidder. This second growth has probably been relogged now. It goes to show then forests are sustainable doesn't it.

Impressive raft, not the weather for mistakes- it looks cold in every way. Needed good circulation in your hands that trip, gloves would be icy cold wet in seconds with the snow and wet chains, ropes. Beautiful photo captures the day perfectly. Do you think they towed it sideways so it yaws less?

Bit of snow didn't put those men off, did it.
