If the belly pans or anywhere else gets full of dirt and other stuff it will hold moisture that will cause rusting. You get mice or other rodents in there it will be worse. Always good to keep the belly pans clean.

Well, well. A linkage problem at the end of the day. Who’d have thunk it.?
Why didn't someone think of that back on about post number 13?

Belly pans need to be thought of as a normal maintenance item and not what you do when everything else stops working! Had a 980G from an fother plant that somehow an "operator" managed to fill the belly pan under the engine with about a foot of stone. How a front end loader gets crushed stone that deep in a belly pan is something I could never understand.

Well shortly after I cleaned it out I ended up with an oil leak on the cooler lines, guess being buried in wet stone for a few years is not good for steel lines! Who Knew?

Yep, it was decieving. The linkages moved but not far enough. I'm thinking too it may have been more in the bell crank linkage between the pedal drop linkages to the horizontal linkage to the trans. It was hard to tell what wasn't happy. It's in a crappy place to work on. In the shop I could have pulled everything and beat it to death much easier.

Not having a book is like brain surgery by braille. If it was my dozer, I'd have a book. The owner is a non-mechanical rancher that isn't big on prevention. He calls someone to come fix stuff when it doesn't work.
Sometimes getting free use of a machine doesn't turn out free as it's supposed to. I should be able to transport in the next few days. When I get it here I may end up getting the book anyway.
Next I think it's going to need brakes. Now that their not dragging, they don't work really all that well. I'm not looking forward to that.

You can always tell the owner you won't work on it until he pays for a manual or gets copy of what the manual shows for working on the brakes. The shop that rebuilt my engine was kind enough to print out the removal procedure for me. They've done the same for other things I've had to repair too but I've spent a fair amount with them. That said it was with the old service dept. team. The new service dept. is brutal though. Had to pay up front to pull a sprocket off a hyd. motor and they had my motor as collateral. Go to pick it up the next day and it hadn't moved off the counter. Then one of the parts guys is upset at me because I was asking the difference between 2 similar hydraulic filters listed for my machine. They are the distributor for the filters. Shouldn't the distributor be able to find out about the products they sell? I went with the newer filter listed and found online it is a 5 micron and the older listing was an 8 micron. Distributor should have been able to tell me that.

Hah! Yeh,,,,, it's belongs to a buddy. He's letting me have it for extended loan,,,,,for free. I'm going to use it for clearing burned trees and brush. We just survived the SCU fire. I'm figuring to pull a 100' or so of anchor chain between it and my D5. I'm also going to use it as the yo-yo for the really steep work. So,,,, it's pretty hard to lay down much in demands.

Update,,,
I got it moving and doing what it's supposed to more or less. The brakes were pretty weak but sort of worked enough for being able to move it.
I walked it out a couple miles and the brakes started to clear up and actually got to something I would be content with. It was even starting to be able to cross friction fairly well on ups and downs. Everything was working better that I had expected. I shifted up and down 1-2 all in forward. After a couple miles I was going to park it to order up a transport and when I hit the decel the brakes locked. I ran the rpm up and down in and out of gear. a couple times at WOT with the trans already in gear it would be sitting like in neutral then wham drop into gear and act semi normal until I hit the decel and the brakes would lock and rpm would hit the governor.
I'm hoping for trans filter. Any thoughts? Something else,,,, does anyone have the # for the 4H series 2 trany filter? I have a case of them for my 5B so i'm hoping for an same same.

I got back out to the machine this morning and pulled the trans filter. I've seen hundreds of bad and slightly deformed filters but nothing like this. This is exactly how it came out. D4 filter.jpg D4 Filter Cut.jpg I brought it back to the shop and did a cut and press and a bigger surprise is there is no metal to be seen. Maybe some micro- metal if you hold it up to the sun just right but nothing like I was expecting. I also found out that this is the filter that was in it when the owner bought the machine in 2007.

It is MIA. For the length of time I'm going to run it, I will drop a ring magnet inside the filter.
I'm assuming you know the magnetic strainer is NOT in the same housing as that imploded filter?

It is shown here as #41

Could not find a maintenance manual for the D4H right off on SIS.

Thanks for the info. When the mag strainer was mentioned, I drew a complete blank as to it's location. Something didn't click in my head but I couldn't figure it out that there is no room for the oem mag strainer in the filter housing. That was a big DUH on my part. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I knew something wasn't right but had no clue. I'm going back out after daylight this morning to replace the filter. Now I can clean the strainer too.

A bit more help please. I'm trying to picture the filter housing in my soggy brain and the location of where the strainer will be. I see it in the diagram but in actual location, where is it in orientation to the filter housing? Would it be forward of the housing? Left side as would be under left foot sitting in the seat? I don't know this machine well enough at all to picture where it will be. Is there an under floor picture available?

G..G..G..Granville.........!! Fetch your cloth.
Front of the machine is to the right in KSH's diagram above.
Find the transmission pump (mounted on manifold 11) and follow the pump suction line (hose 37) back to the rear machine case.
Directly above where that hose clamps at the back end should be an oval plate (12) secured by two bolts. The mag screen is behind that.

Thanks. I should be able to figure it out from there. In a couple hours we'll find out how smart I really am,,,,,
Sorry about the drawing but that was the best I could find! Sometimes Cat is real good on showing things and other times they like to make you work for it! Still from all the various equipment I worked on over 40+ years Cat is one of if not the best!
