Here's the latest on the excavator accident.
This isn't official, it's just what the job superintendent shared with me.

The accident happened first thing in the morning. Meaning that the bucket became detached as the operator had the machine swing to the left and into the ditch. It appears that prior to moving the machine that the operator did not check the coupler making sure that it was locked and good to go. From experience I know that a coupler just does not bleed off and detach. But somehow this particular coupler did bleed off and did detach. Why and how? It seems that the safety device that keeps that from happening must have been tampered with or removed. Not good. Anyways, like I said, this isn't in any way official, it's just what the job super told me when I asked.

My company is working on the same job, what I've been told by our owner is that OSHA came and did and investigation and determined the coupler was faulty/broken. however thats just third party information.

Every now and then you come across an old classic machine that isn't all beat to crap. This old 660B is tight! Everything works on this one. And power... this one's got plenty. Foot on the diff lock, load up the B G, grab a gear and the steering gets real easy. Yeah... its got that kind of power. The retarder, cutting brakes, trans hold, diff lock, hell....its even got a working parking brake. All the gauges work too!

That is a 1 quality scraper material right there if the rocks to big just shoot it out a the can when its stuck gives the powder monkey something to do would thise machines really know what to do if they were in potato dirt it would likely make them all lay down on the job

Local company here was doing a job like that had a 10 pushing 37s wedged a rock the size of the can in there after 2 days of a hammer on a 320 they let the powder monkey have it apparently he did a really good job cause 2 hours after he got there that machine was running

We broke 3 yesterday and ripped the corner bits off of 2 today. I missed all of the carnage yesterday as they had me on special duty. However today... it may have looked like bombs were going off in the cut and fill but my haul roads were proper! I actually had a fun 10 hrs today

What museum did you guys snag that 660 from? TOO Clean that one, sweet old machines.
The boss picked this one up along with I believe 3 others at RB a few months back. Talking with the mechanic who worked for the guy that previously owned these machines says this one went for somewhere between 10 - 12K. One of them still has the scraper bowl attached. It looks to be brand spanking new. I have yet to see it but who knows?
man....I wish I had more money than brains. Pick up something like this to cruise around town in when the crap hits the fan... I could do that! stuff like this will run for ever. Unlike anything else that has a circuit board that will fail from an E. M. P.
