Had a interesting truck driver for the move, where we had to unload was up a hill at a quarry site. Of course "I've driven for years- I know how to get up there!"
Supertrucker proceeds to try speed shifting down in the flat- to "get a run for it". Of course he starts hopping in 3rd on the way up the hill. He manages to back it back down. And instead of just dropping it in low, and staying steady, gives a repeat performance of full throttle speed run, and ruins a axle or 3rd member when it starts hopping again and he stays on the throttle.
We sit around for 3 hours, waiting on the towing service to bring him another truck, swap trailer, and he does the same thing. I figured we were going to watch another axle get it, but by a miracle- he made it up the hill.
Of course, then we got to unload in the fading daylight, with it raining, and had to leave the cranes there because it was too dark to bring them home. If the driver was the one having to change the axle out- I think he'd learn how to drive. Then again, he didn't seem the learning type.
The quarry / concrete boys were kinda mad, they're on the hook for the crane time, because the driver wouldn't just stick it in low, and let it walk at 3/4 throttle. We had a loader and excavator if we needed to pull him up. We got to stand up at the top of the hill and watch the whole show.
