It probably doesn't matter and I think I understand now how to add it, but I was unclear in my wording that I buy my diesel fuel in 5 gallon cans not the anti-gel stuff.

If fuel has not gelled and have added the correct quantity for a fuel add load the action of fuel system recycle to tank will do that mixing for you.

For me I installed Arctic Fox tank heaters, most of my destinations were in British Columbia and I didn't trust any fuel anywhere, and still don't.

Environmental regs are so tight here, the days of water getting into old underground tanks are over. Haven't had water in fuel for years. The Irving family has pretty much put a stop to mom and pop gas stations.

If #1 diesel exists here, I've never heard of it. My sister was manager of a fuel dealer, she had never heard of it. I've never seen it for sale.
Those I've talked to, dealers, and consumers agree we have summer fuel same as #2 furnace fuel, winter fuel, cut with kerosene, and similar mixes for on road.

What dealers sell at a given time is suitable for machines that will use the fuel in a short time. Mixed fuel begins to go into dealers tanks in December. Where the tank is half full, it may mix to a low ratio of kerosene. Still, it is OK for fuel to be consumed immediately, it ain't all that cold in December.

It wasn't necessarily water that I was concerned about, keeping the fuel warm

That is what I posted about earlier, #1 is just about extinct around here. Furnace fuel is #2 treated with additives.

I guess I only know of 2 pumps that sell #1, winter only. There's more pumps that sell kerosene. I'd bet they are using #1 to blend instead of kerosene though, kerosene is more refined for lamps and unvented heaters. #1 is just a lighter fuel for gravity burners, and easier starting diesels, much cheaper than kerosene. I think it was a JD manual that recommended #1 below a certain temp, OR above 5,000 ft.

One station here has a Red off road pump
Regular #2 pumps(high volume) at least weekly, a small Kerosene pump well away from both of the others and a No1 diesel next to the K pump.
Asked the owner about them
Get 8k of general delivery and will be blended here Nov 1, has 1k Kerosene and 2K No 1 on hand. Said tge local small farmers that do not have fuel on site use his pumps as does a local contractor for K1 for his jobsite indoor heaters.

Used to have the Detroit Diesel dilution guide, someone snagged it from me YEARS ago, key part of it was(1950s) Unleaded Regular Gas as a ONE TIME Maximum 5 gallon to 100 gallon Number 2 fuel oil. Never tried it but did use small amounts of White gas in a pinch when at Ft. Scott truck yard.

If you're on a building without power, like many of my toys are in, you can use a coleman tent heater, light it outside, then slide it under the oil pan, usually an hour will get a little motor warm enough to start easier.

In the great outdoors, you might need to resort to this old chestnut:
